An hour to go until our Vancouver #PowerBI and Modern #Excel meet-up gets underway! We're excited to have Rick de Groot presenting on custom comparer functions in #PowerQuery. While there are standard functions, such as Comparer.Ordinal and Comparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase, you can gain more control by creating your own comparison logic. 👍There's still time to RSVP and join us, go to: https://lnkd.in/gZQbkX3z (The session will also be recorded.)

This is another great feature that's going to drive both adoption and usage. One of my favorite features of Excel has always been the ability to connect it to data, and this enables excel to connect to prebuilt models. This will allow and encourage even stronger data participation and data cleanliness. #FightShadowIT

A common request for users first working with a new report/dashboard is “how can I export this to excel?” This question might be the bane of many data viz developer’s existence, but this feature is a win-win from a lot of perspectives. Familiar exploration for excel users, data that remains up to date, and row level security that remains in place. I’m definitely a fan of features that reduce repetitive human process, improve data availability, reduce data duplication, and improve data security. Having all of those covered in one feature release is pretty cool. 😎

Interesting FP&A-related article on how to automatically refresh a Power Query table each time you open the excel file. Two warnings to avoid future pain or disappointment, since it wasn’t covered in an otherwise helpful tutorial: One, make sure you also set to auto-refresh any merge query tables created with this table. This will ensure that source file updates will be reflected in any financial forecasts that are calculated from the Power Query tables. Two, the article recommends selecting background refresh for these updates. What this means is that any stakeholders who use the excel file will open the file and assume the data is current. Alternatively, you can turn off background refresh. This will cause excel to lock up momentarily while Power Query updates the tables. Control will then return to excel and the end user will view only current data. If “momentarily” translates to several minutes, your end users may be better served if you refresh the data manually after month-end close.
