One truth you must always keep close to your heart is that, you have what it takes to change your life. For real, you do. Believing this truth takes you some steps forward and then working hard gets you where you want to be. Start taking the necessary steps to achieve those dreams. Make an effort everyday, little or great. The cliché saying, "little drops of water make an ocean" is still very valid. So today, ask yourself, what is that one thing you have always wanted to do or be? Tell yourself you can achieve it, believe yourself, then go ahead and get busy. I remember back in Year 10 we had to write an 800 word essay and I thought; welp, pack ‘er up boys we’re done here… Then later, at uni, I remember seeing one of my assignments – 3000 words minimum – oof 😱 Years later, the same stress… but now over a few DOZEN words. Gone are the days of worrying about meeting a word minimum, I can write for days without a thought. However, chuck a word LIMIT on something and that’s where it gets challenging. If you’ve agonized over timing on radio or podcast 30s, or can’t delete enough words for a headline or CTA, you know how rough it can get. It can get especially frustrating when you’re writing for audio or video because you’re writing something that will only ever be HEARD. A word count can be a pain, but having to squeeze every last syllable...? Over the years I’ve built up my own strategies for getting over these hurdles, so let’s talk options. Here’s how I’m switching from slow to fast. 1. Don’t start with a clear head. Have your ideas loosely lined up and ready to go. 2. Practice writing quick. Yep, use a timer. I will simply say it - There is good writing and there is bad writing. Imagine bad writing as someone barging into a conversation, hastily shouting about their product's features without understanding the listeners' needs or interests. It's like a salesperson waving a brochure without considering if the audience is even looking for what they're offering. Good writing, however, is like a thoughtful friend who listens, empathizes with the struggles faced, then gently introduces a solution, describing how it perfectly fits their situation. It's like a storyteller weaving a tale of triumph over similar challenges, showcasing how their product isn't just a tool but a tailored answer, a reliable companion for the journey ahead. 3 years ago, someone publicly disagreeing with me would have knocked me for a loop. But now I recognize that I need to stand for something (and sometimes it will be controversial). Otherwise, I’m just like everyone else – another voice in the echo chamber – and no one will notice me here. That’s what your copy needs to do, too: Take a stand. And you have to be okay with people telling you you’re wrong. When you’re paying for copy, you have to be prepared to stand firm in the message it sends. You can’t change it anytime someone pushes back on it. Yes, you can – and should – consider others’ perspectives. But first, you have to know your own perspective.
