What does it take to create lasting change? Today in the US we honor Martin Luther King, Jr. for his lasting achievement -- generating the civil rights movement in the US. When I think about the focus that he must have had every single day to stay true to his mission, to brush off the naysayers, to put up with countless indignities, I am so inspired. MLK Jr brought together politicians, business leaders, community groups, educators -- millions of individuals who decided collectively not to accept the system of segregation as it was and not to accept an extractive economy built on the backs of laborers. Today we need to turn around our ageist society. So that we treat every person as an equal, with equal dignity, no matter their age or cognitive ability. No matter their race or ethnicity. No matter their gender. We need to stay focused on ensuring that everyone's voice is heard, that everyone matters, and that every single person has the ability to make change. This is a big endeavor. It needs policymakers, business leaders, and citizens of all ages to step up and say "we need a change." My team is trying to enhance dignity for all. We've created The LiveWell Method, a roadmap to quality of care and quality of life for people who live and work in long term care facilities. What we *really* do is engage every person in the community. We make sure that everyone has a voice. That ideas are heard and acted on. That everyone is safe. We build community because that's where change starts.
