Developing tests for #Diagnosis of newly emerging #Diseases can be difficult because known positive and negative #Samples are not readily available to validate the test. For instance, in the early stages of #SARSCoV2 infections in the world, there were few tests that could accurately diagnose exposure. This publication by #CSU #MIP VandeWoude Lab and #Statistics researchers uses a novel #StatisticalMethod for estimating test cutoffs to increase accuracy of diagnosis for future applications. My heart broke when I saw the digital images of the urine sample of a 7-year-old participant during our field validation of the AiDx multi-diagnostic automated microscope. 7,000 Schistosomiasis Haematobium egg count in 10ml of urine is completely incomparable to the World Health Organization’s classification of ≥ 50 eggs/ 10ml of urine as high infection intensity. My heart raced. This could have been my son I thought. Where did you get this sample from? I asked the team from the field.  Thank God Mr. Abba (the public health officer) was closed by. He saw the AiDx images of the examined urine sample on the screen, it was clear that the boy was dying, and he said to me in a reassuring manner “don’t worry, we will find the boy and treat him”. Indeed, we found him in a very terrible state. He was too weak to stand, too sick to go to school and his parents were devastated as no one knew what was wrong with him. We treated him immediately, put him on surveillance and I am super glad that he is back on his feet and back to school. 1,200 kids in the community were also treated. UPMC Presbyterian researchers identified 10 patients with the same hospital-acquired #infection using genetic sequencing. They traced the source to an interventional radiology lab with improper sterilization procedures, partly due to a faulty training video. This discovery led to immediate action to improve patient safety. Their work, highlighted in the documentary "The Pitch: Patient Safety’s Next Generation," emphasizes innovative technology solutions. One standout is the Enhanced Detection System for Healthcare-Associated Transmission (EDS-HAT), developed by Dr. Lee Harrison and Dr. Artur Dubrawski at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, respectively. #EDSHAT detected 99 #outbreaks and identified transmission routes in 65% of cases during a trial at UPMC, surpassing traditional methods. The documentary, funded by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, showcases various technology-driven initiatives across the health care sector. Despite ongoing efforts to address #medical errors, they remain prevalent, emphasizing the need for continued innovation in patient safety. Our new paper on improving rare disease documentation is now published! 📄 Title: "Transition Database for Rare Diseases and Its Use for Clinical Documentation" Not only the rarity of the diseases but also the poor documentation of rare diseases often leads to an immense delay in diagnosis. One of the main problems here is the inadequate coding with common classification. Our paper presents a comprehensive concept and implementation strategy for storing and mapping ORPHAcodes, introducing the Transition Database for Rare Diseases. Historical cohort study design is a valuable research method. It saves time, resources and makes enrollment of rare disease trials more feasible. Usual technologies and biology are useless, doctors paralyzed and patients abandoned ( mainly women, who care). In medicine, there is a widespread culture of ignorance, fostered by an education system that trains reproducers rather than creators. Let's face it, doctors haven't learned how to learn. Thus, from a scientific perspective things are going well. I would not say the same for the patients... while Morgane Bomsel (INSERM) has identied the virus in platelets ( abstract 28) we have three presentations at https://lnkd.in/dh4WD5gf abstract book available at https://lnkd.in/dAHUsZw6 Our research pathway (including the link to Rouen and Macquarie) is described in abstract P22 https://lnkd.in/dea-vGj9 our results in abstract 002 and abstract P34 002 is the transcriptomic research first by-products here the P34 poster; https://lnkd.in/dQHPnRqd From this one could infer that the general pathophysiological pattern of so called Long Covid (most probably Chronic Covid) is that of cerebral ischemia, with damage to numerous peripheral control centers, generally controlled by the vagus nerve (heart-lung-intestine), and memory disorders associated with (or provoked by) complex immunological phenomena, including stimulation of the platelet (hemostasis disorders), mast cell (allergies) systems and trigger of endothelin 1 activation. This is an unexpected and outstanding journey. The problem is cost. Up to now, we've worked on our own account. But the open route requires major investment in special reagents and data management. I hope to be able to find a grant.
