708,330 Characters. 124,935 words. 530 pages. Back in 2019, we had a major communication problem internally. My Solution: A bi-weekly open letter on Sunday from me to the team to share at what is happening across the company. From good to bad, revenue updates, new hires and departures, to recent hiccups within the company and celebrations of anniversaries, the open letter was my way to share transparency across the entire company to keep everyone on the same page. This week, I'm finishing 2023 with Open Letter #111, which means over the last 222 weeks... Building a company is hard and communication is everything. Especially if you are remote. I make sure I keep backups of these as one day, I plan to go read every letter again and remember the journey. Because this is a story I never want to forget.

Starting out when hiring, the person should help you with either: 1. A money making activity 2. Saving you time so you can make more money It should be clear to you how your new hire helps you do 1 or both of these things. Period.

Two key questions to ask yourself about employing staff: 1. Are they born for the job or are you trying to fit a square peg in a round whole? 2. Would you be worried if they went and worked for your biggest competitor? If the answer is no to either one, they aren’t the right person.
