A couple of new updates for musicians interested in exploring microtonality and tuning further: 1. Join the UnTwelve "Xenharmonic Praxis Summer Event" this year, June 20-23rd, in Conway, New Hampshire. More info: https://lnkd.in/gHifB32D 2. Try out the online microcsound interactive instrument, which uses a preloaded Ars Nova late medieval composition, but if you get a handle on the syntax of the input file, you can play around with your own doodles: https://lnkd.in/gvDhkVdH

Is cancel culture real? If so, how can we tell if it’s getting better or worse? FIRE has the answer: the Campus Deplatforming Database, which tracks attempts to disinvite campus speakers or cancel performances, exhibits, and film screenings.

ICYMI: a young person sharing their experience of making sense of difficult emotions, finding a safe space and connection through our young people’s project based in Bridgend, funded by Children in Need. It’s great to hear how with a trustful relationship and support, they now feel more connected, confident and secure in being themselves. Two years ago I gave a talk in Germany on the power of late-starting orchestras and the importance of paying attention to older folks. I never posted it on account of the poor recording quality, but I stumbled on the file this weekend and decided to see if any of it could be salvaged. The answer was ‘meh’ so I include here just a short clip because I will die on the hill of anti-ageism advocacy and the way music can make such a huge difference in everyone’s lives. [If anyone has any suggestions for removing background noise, please share!] https://lnkd.in/eZM_9Gt3 There’s such a disconnect in the way we put so much stake in younger generations’ potential to dig us out of our messes, the way we steer so many resources (albeit still not enough) towards nurturing their spirits and encouraging their safe and healthy growth, only to turn around a decade or so later and end all the funding and support. And then we expect them to carry forth undeterred, as if abruptly taking away their safety nets and the things that have brought them joy and comfort won’t interfere with their ability to ‘save the world’. Adults are not inured to societal and environmental breakdowns. We anguish over the chaotic state of the world, and are terrified and often paralyzed because of it. But somehow we hit a certain age, and it’s everyone for themselves. Suddenly deprived of systemic support we grow hopeless, sad, isolated (and far less able to help the world, and its children, because of it!)… So we turn whatever energy and attention we have left, back to the youth. And the cycle begins anew without us actually getting anywhere meaningful. I have a lot more to say about this, but let’s start with how we need programs (like music!) for adults too!

This article focuses on attributing proper credit to folks who work on Lighting Design for live concerts, but I think this is just as relevant when talking about corporate projects. Who gets credit for what, versus who actually did what? I don't think there's ever an easy answer because the best projects grow and evolve with the work of many people. So it's a very thought-provoking read.

My fourth TEDX talk was at TEDxBerlin focusing on the theme of “Super Power”. The introduction to my audiovisual performance was inspired by superheroes who don't possess natural superpowers but become superheroes through technology. This is the basic concept behind Ain TheMachine: I use the sounds of my body, voice, and random objects, but through technology, I can transform these sounds into music. #tedxspeaker #tedx #tedxtalk #audiovisual #livemusic #liveperformance https://lnkd.in/ekTaMrTS
