Most early stage companies don't have the luxury of hiring a VP of Sales + VP of Mktg + CCO. The burn typically won't support that structure. The "EASY BUTTON" would seemingly be to hire a CCO, to run all commercial activities. One "C" level salary < two "VP" level salaries, right? But "EASY" does not always mean "BETTER". If you can find one person with intimate knowledge of Marketing & Sales, then the strategy outlined above works well. But not someone who spent their whole career in sales, and did a summer rotation as an Associate Product Manager in the Mktg dept....or vice versa. Rather, an individual who's has spent meaningful amounts of their career in both functions, with deep knowledge of each, and how they will together to impact the success of your product and company. These people are REALLY hard to find...the one's who got their "MBA in the business", as Ryan Blasko of The Mullings Group describes in the clip below. Also, they usually don't come cheap...(insert law of scarcity). TGIF! How's your week? [ #Reflection & #Hiring] This week is short but there was so much learning and reflection: 👩💻 Had an incredibly inspiring conversation with a Med Tech senior leader. I see passion in his eyes as he speaks and I am so encouraged by how he is bringing the industry, professional association and charity all together to make impactful campaigns on #patienteducation. "You cannot think of what you don't know" he said. In order to equip people with tools and solution for healthcare, you need to expose them to the education and ideas. 👩🏫 Had a 2 hour conversation with a COO of a biotech company, discussed about market landscape and opportunities. Brainstormed their hiring strategy as they set their foot print into Asia. What's more exciting (if you are as geek as me), the cutting edge technology on #preventionhealth is mind-blowing, and truly ground breaking. *will share more in due time!* 🤝 Caught up with a placed candidate and hear how the opportunity had led her to where she wants to be now. It's not all roses, but she thinks it's providing her the growth she needed and is so very appreciative of that. Opportunity

One of my career dreams is to get the chance to hire a first time PMM. Here’s why: Almost daily I get DMs from men and women who are trying to break into PMM. It’s a grind. There are simply not enough clear paths for people to become product marketers. It’s all back doors, personal connections, changes within the same company, and freak moments of luck. And those aren’t bad (my story is a mix of all of those), They’re just not creating enough opportunities for the countless talented people out there who would make great product marketers. So if I can provide that entryway for someone someday, I want to. We need more of them. —- P.S. kudos to Product Marketing leaders out there who are hiring APMMs and first-time PMMs. As someone who benefited from that, you’re changing their life from the better. 💙
