Serendipity (not the wonderful cheese romcom) or coincidence, this cool article by Maddie Khaw, an intern at the Boston Globe, features my point of view on the trends in water bottles. Was I super busy when the email request came in? Yes. Did I still say I'd be happy to talk? Yes. I'm not sure why, but I sensed I should. Maddie and I spoke in the afternoon, and that was it.
When I got home that night, I mentioned the interview to my high school senior, who is graduating with a concentration in TV and Media arts. During the Newton Teachers strike, my daughter chose to be a speaker at the rally rather than cover the strike story for the school—a tough decision. After her speech, a reporter interviewed her, and they shared their mutual interest in journalism. That encounter helped my kid pursue media, politics, and journalism in college. The idea was there, but it took seeing and experiencing a young person doing the work to give her the confidence to do it, too.
My kid handed me Maddie Khaw's card. I thought about the chances that my daughter and I would meet the same person within a few weeks and felt it was meant to be. Yesterday, my kid committed to Bennington College because of the program that allows her to combine her interests.
This morning, the article I was interviewed for was forwarded to me by the Dean of Questrom. Four women (all of us rock stars in our own right) focused on different aspects of communication, recognizing and acknowledging where we are in our respective journeys, saying -- keep going. You're doing great.
It was also an unbelievable reminder that these small moments of helping, encouraging, and kindness change us and open us to many new opportunities to be there for one another. Even when you are busy. Say yes.
Oh, yeah, here is the interview on water bottles. 😀
