As of recently, quite a few companies with factories and partnerships in Myanmar have been divesting from the country citing that the changes brought from the recent coup have urged their actions. Companies such as Chevron and Marks and Spencer have made the move and now fashion giant, HM, is beginning their journey out of Myanmar. Many are hoping that the large number of companies leaving will cause the country to isolate economically and diplomatically which in turn will force the government to make a positive change for itself. It is reported that HM also exited the country due to the concerns of forced labor of children and adults and inadequate labor conditions. The organization, Walk Free, released records in its 2023 Global Slavery Index that pointed to HM using forced labor to create its textiles. José Manuel Velarde CSCP, CPIM, CPSM, CPSDé Margaret A. H&M has begun the process of exiting Myanmar, the company confirmed to Fashion Dive. The Sweden-based fast-fashion giant sources materials from 26 suppliers and 39 factories in Myanmar, according to the supply chain disclosure on its website. China, with 375 suppliers and 421 factories, and Bangladesh, with 137 suppliers and 227 factories, are the company’s largest manufacturing bases. Myanmar has been under military rule since February 2021, when a junta seized control, deposing the elected government. Social governance in regard to the supply chain is becoming particularly important for organizations. “We’ve always done it this way” In Székesfehérvár at a forum organized by MGYOSZ/BusinessHungary I took part in an exciting roundtable discussion with several employers. It was a continuation of our joint action plan preparatory work, to be launched in November. In the first half of the workshop, the organizers presented the results of the past 6 months’ work about the anticipated structural changes in the labor force, the trends affecting the Hungarian labor market and their anticipated consequences by 2035. The report will be published and made available to employers in the coming weeks. Several timely and influential topics were discussed. A significant change is foreseen that will impact the future of education and may also affect the employees’ professional training, since companies need specialized, skilled workers. However, it is important to remember that this is not possible without structural and mindset changes. It will not work with the same methods, because as Heraclitus said circa 500 BC, the only constant is change. This is true even today. We can start, either as an organization or at a personal level, on a new path, possibly well outside our comfort zone. I’m very happy with this initiative and I am proud to have been able to represent ALPLA Group. Let’s build the future together. Join us. 🚀 More details: Adrienn Bálint #alpla #familyofpioneers #mgyosz #future #development #education #labormarket

Malaysia's Trade Commissioner based in Paris, who connects French, Spanish and Portuguese companies with Malaysian companies.
Batik, a significant part of Malaysian heritage with a history spanning centuries, took center stage yesterday as I met with Batik Addict and Suri Lifestyle, represented by Madam Shu and Madam Sally. Their dedication to championing women's welfare is truly commendable. Suri Lifestyle from Klang creates batik fashion goods from donated hotel bed linens and used jeans, even collaborating with Uniqlo. On the other hand, Batik Addict from Langkawi designs tiffins using batik. Watch the videos to know more about their inspiring stories. A special thanks to our Ambassador HE Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim for facilitating this connection. I am genuinely excited about their projects, evident from my enthusiasm in the video through the excessive use of the word 'very'. I extend a warm invitation to partners from France, Spain, and Portugal to join us in supporting their cause. #MalaysianHeritage #Batik #WomenEmpowerment #Sustainability #Fashion #Partnerships #Europe Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) MATRADE Paris UNIQLO Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI)

"The situation in Myanmar is complex, and keeping our production in the country involves risks, but we also believe that ending the relationship with our suppliers would only worsen the situation for the workers who make our products. After consulting a range of local stakeholders, reading reports on the situation, and evaluating what is happening in our partner factories, we came to a conclusion: human rights due diligence is more difficult than it used to be, but it is still possible." The above statement was shared by Oberalp Group today. Oberalp, an Italian business specializing in outdoor sports garments, sources from 2 factories in Myanmar and is a valued member of EuroCham Myanmar's Garment Group, which brings together over 35 European garment businesses. As a Chamber with a solid presence on the ground, we support responsible European businesses operating in Myanmar by providing reliable information and stakeholder engagement to enable enhanced due diligence. EuroCham Myanmar believes that " by engaging as a company in discussions with local labour rights groups on wages and labour conditions, you can have leverage. By leaving the country, it is difficult to see how you can have an influence on local conditions," as stated by our CEO, Ms Karina Ufert, during the OECD Garment and Footwear Forum in February of this year. ZAMBIA An entrepreneur in Zambia who received support from the Finnish government uses children to sort waste. Children work without protective equipment. Around them hover fumes which are created from the plastic being melted in the yard. This became apparent when Yle visited the Plastpave Zambia company last week in Zambia, near the capital Lusaka. The visit was part of a training program organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, the purpose of which was to introduce journalists to development aid in Zambia. When Yle arrived, about a dozen children were visually sorting the waste. According to Mulela (the owner), it is not about the exploitation of child labor. - We don't have child labor because they are not paid anything! Children like trash anyway and they get to keep the cookies they find. ... According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), children working can be considered child labour when the work is physically or psychologically harmful to the child's development and when it affects the child's opportunities to attend school. When Yle visited the Plastpave Zambia company, schools in Zambia were closed because there was a cholera epidemic in the country. Some of the children digging through waste were clearly under school age. The children and their mothers did not seem to have the necessary protective equipment for waste handling, such as gloves or coveralls. "Don't go walking in the waste because you don't have protective equipment," CEO Mulela instructed journalists when presenting his company. Children and adults worked near metal dams where plastic is melted before being cast into a new shape. None of the employees Yle saw had respirators. The company's CEO did not worry about the potential health effects of the fumes rising from the dams. The CEO interviewed by Yle talked about his company quite openly and seemed to be completely unaware that the company's operations do not necessarily meet the criteria of responsible business operations. Plastpave Zambia is one of the 369 Zambian companies that Finland supported in the years 2018–2023 through the AGS project. (Apologies for the translation) - https://lnkd.in/dVwaJBRN
