The One Night Stand is a great initiative but has previously only delivered a once-off sugar hit to regional economies. The support of Music Australia in building regional capacity to grow creative economies in regional spaces is a welcome move. There are aspirations in regional communities to host live music events and appetite from regional communities to attend music events. Let's find more ways to ensure creative industries can thrive in regional areas, particularly through regional touring circuits, live music venues, and youth arts programs. "Great, doesn't just happen!" I am eventually sought out by a lot of people that initiate their conversation with me by saying "We have this great event coming up..."  I know that the vision is almost always greater than what becomes reality.  This happens for all sorts of reasons like time, money, resources...  It is my job to do everything I can to make sure that I meet or exceed the vision that my customer is trying to achieve.  This means that I need to be very over prepared with planning, equipment and a complete understanding of the event.  Running sound and lighting well is the most fundamental thing that we do.  Making sure that we do all the proper prep prior to the event like connecting with bands/performers, knowing who the sponsors are, putting together set break music, pre-event site visit, testing all needed equipment, many more things to ensure that we make truly make this "event" as great as it can be.  In short "great" is very intentional, thoughtful, and deliberate.  Be "great" at what you do.

ATT: Melbourne CBD and Richmond Restaurants, Bars and Cafes. You have a MASSIVE summer of concerts coming up. Huge opportunities to cater to a captive audience already going to the venues with pre and post show offers. Heres some ideas... - Pre show drinks package starting 2 hours before concert - Create take away picnic options of your best cafe menu items for concert goers to take to an outdoor show - Pre show set dinner package, concert goers are always anxious if their food will come out in time for them to eat. Reassure them that they will get to the show on time. If they order by a cut off time. - Take pre orders and offer a value add/upsell of a bottle of wine or dessert. - If you don't have a $0.50 offer or upsell for the upcoming 50 Cent concert, are you really a business person? - Create novelty drinks or entrees related to the artist and start promoting them 2 weeks prior to concert days. - Some fans will be wired post show, why not encourage fan groups to come to your venue for a wind down & debrief post show with some snacks and a night cap. You could play music from the artist while they are there. I'll try and come up with some more before summer really starts. With the sun shining there's one thing on my mind- FESTIVAL SEASON. But with ticket costs at record high, and 36 festivals cancelling/postponing in 2024 so far, with ~100 predicted, the crisis has been cited as worse than Covid (John Roston, AIF CEO). To quell the doom and gloom I wanted to highlight a few campaigns aiming to buck these alarming trends, interested to hear of any others too! Drop the Headliner is one such campaign that's gained some traction, with SGP adopting the scheme this week . When one headliner can easily cost £100,000+, dropping just one big act can either save money or allow for better allocation of funds to improve experience. UK Music, a collective industry voice, are urging the UK government to cut VAT on tickets from 20% to 10% to bring them in line with the average EU rate. I passionately believe that the joy of reading, and fulfilment from books, is a great leveller, to be enjoyed by EVERYONE. I whole-heartedly agree that Book Festivals improve our world - see the joint statement below from the UK's leading festivals, including Cambridge Literary Festival where I am a Trustee. Book Festivals are just magical. Just think: you can go from reading a book on your own.... - to then see the author who created it, up-close and in-person - get to hear the author share insights and perspectives that deepen the meaning of what you have read - hear a funny anecdote, inside joke or story they may never tell again - get to ask them your own burning questions - share a communal experience of the book that prreviously only 'lived' in your mind (unless you read out loud - what a joy!) - be the first to hear about their next books or ideas - meet them in person to hand over your copy of their work for personalised signing while you share a little chat - to leaving the event brimming with ideas, possibilities and maybe even new friends. Whatever your age, whatever your background, wherever you live - I urge you to get out there and enjoy your Book Festivals - especially if you haven't felt it was 'your thing' or thought they're 'not for you'. This is a topic which is very close to my heart. I firmly believe that the love of reading which my parents gave me when I was very young has been the key to my success in my career. It has certainly been one of the great joys of my life. You may think that book festivals are a middle-class indulgence, but if you look at bit deeper at what festivals such as Hay Global actually do, you will see the 90% of the iceberg which is under the water - fantastic work with schools, underprivileged communities and aspiring creatives, in the UK and increasingly across the globe. This activity develops literacy and a love for self-directed reading. It also provides valuable work experience in difficult-to-access careers for young people who are not from a privileged background. As with all charities, it is becoming harder and harder for book festivals to access funding and the contribution of individuals is more and more important. You may not be able to attend one of these festivals in person, but take a look at their websites and you will find a huge range of resources which are available online for a small fee - check out the Hay Player, for example. It is a treasure trove of amazing talks, interviews and performances from many of the best-known names in the arts and sciences. I know most people in my network care passionately about ideas and knowledge as the way to create a better world. Book festivals are a great place to start - and to meet like-minded people. End of lecture - but do take a look and think about how you could contribute. 🙂
