One of the hardest things to deal with as a VC is when someone asks you about a portfolio company. It’s usually a long pause where you calculate the best way to answer the question. If they’re doing bad, you have to not lie about it. Yet, you can’t make it sound too bad. Because every company has its ups and downs. And you don’t want to hurt their chances of getting follow on funding or a new customer by making it sound worse than it is. And if they’re doing well, the other party will think your exaggerating. Since you are incentivized for personal gains to do so. Always a conundrum! But always lead with truth, as any misinformation that might hurt the other party will come back to haunt you down the line.
