There are so many practical ways for leaders to embrace the spirit of Juneteenth on our teams and bring a higher level of equality for all. Here are a few ideas to embrace today: 1. Give actionable feedback and opportunities for learning to ALL your direct reports. 2. Use a hiring site like linkedin or indeed to give equal access to jobs rather than word of mouth where good jobs get handed down to the same powerful groups again and again. 3. When you see an opportunity for better Diversity, equity, or inclusion, speak up! Share your ideas with your company DEI team and/or your supervisor. There is still so much work to be done.

In a recent speech commemorating Juneteenth, I wanted to connect the spirit of freedom and progress to a vital topic for our workplaces: the difference between diversity and inclusion. Vernā Myers, perfectly captured this sentiment when she said, "Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance." Imagine your workplace as a dance floor. Diversity is ensuring everyone's invited to the party – a beautiful mosaic of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. But inclusion? That's making sure everyone feels welcome to join the dance. It's about fostering an environment where every individual feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute their unique steps to the company's rhythm. As we reflect on Juneteenth's legacy, let's ask ourselves: How do we create workplaces where everyone feels comfortable stepping onto the dance floor? Conversely, reverse mentoring allows younger individuals to share fresh perspectives and technological savvy with their older counterparts, fostering mutual growth and understanding. 3️⃣ Create Inclusive Spaces: Our nation's strength lies in its diversity, including generational diversity. By creating inclusive spaces where all voices are heard and respected, we harness the collective power of multiple perspectives to drive innovation and progress. 4️⃣ Embrace Flexibility in Work Styles: Throughout history, societal norms and work practices have evolved to accommodate changing generational dynamics. Embracing flexibility in work styles and practices ensures that individuals of all ages can thrive in the workplace, contributing their unique skills and experiences. 5️⃣ Recognize and Celebrate Unique Strengths: Each generation brings its own strengths and insights to the table. By recognizing and celebrating these differences, we foster a culture of appreciation and collaboration, where every individual feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. I believe there can be no manual that explains exactly how to advance Diversity at any company. The work is complex, more so when we need to add the dimension of Equity and Inclusion. This multifaceted approach requires changes at an individual and Systemic level. An experience sharing that relates to the demographic view point is what I look forward as learning by attending this conference.
