The final day of my The Royal Society #PairingScheme24 was spent shadowing Chi Onwurah MP. Part of my reason for applying to the scheme was to find out how best to share the findings from my research with policy makers, including MPs. Spending the day talking to Chi and her team about the huge amoutn of information they get sent and the calls on Chi’s time was really valuable for this. It reinforced the need for brevity and to consider any policy implications of any recommendations we might make. As part of her day, Chi visited a number of ‘drop-ins’ which were organised by external organisations. After Prime Minister Questions we visited 5 different drop-ins in the space of less than 1 hour.  There were more events that she had been invited to, but chosen not to attend. I was surprised by how quickly Chi moved between the different venues, and also how focussed she was when she was finding out about each of the events. Almost the first question she (and other MPs I spotted) asked was whether there was anyone there from their constituency or their region present to talk to. Cunningly, one of the events (#Fight4Pharmacies campaign) did appear to have a number of pharmacists from around the country, possibly for this very reason! Follow up questions from Chi then tended to focus on the implications for the region, or her brief – Science, Innovation and Technology. It was clear that having a short series of talking points was really key – each speaker had only a few minutes to talk about their event and its relevance for each MP. My key takeaways from the day are that it’s vital to be really clear about my research and policy implications, and that, if I can, to relate it to MPs constituency or parliamentary interests. It's been a packed few days, and I'm really greatful to the team at The Royal Society for their hard work to create such an amazing programme for the 30 scientists. What a week! #launchylaunchy not been at such a string of big public events for ages and wanted to reflect with feet up and a large ☕️ ☕️☕️ From #lpiplaunch in Westminster with scholars and place makers demonstrating new vehicles for public and policy engagement in research and evidence, through a very high energy room in Bradford combining creatives and academics with festival facilitation as we plot the route to and through #BD25 and at a real gathering of the clans for the convention of the north. All such necessary and urgent agendas beginning to intersect in fascinating and fabulous ways. Just a few things - the energy and effort in bringing these things to life is superhuman and requires alchemy from organisers. The spotlight has a cast of many hundreds working on the dark 🌟 ⭐️ 💫 - people grumbling that we are only placeholding these agendas waiting for a new government…. Just think of the implementation possibilities as these ways of working have matured 🌱🌱🌱 -on the northern policy firmament specifically - despite the absolute debacle of LEP disestablishment - I felt a huge shift at this year’s convention. It used to be all about public investment for the north. This argument is won (if not yet resourced) the extraordinary difference to previous conventions was the connecting work being done with VC, angel investors etc. lots of private sector people and conversations about bringing jobs and propesperity in spite of govt inertia not because of it 💰💰💰 - the subtleties of really great facilitation and brokerage are a superpower. I have seen wonderful examples of these this week! Changing things requires spaces where personal motivation can spur professional energy 📣👂👂 -network is everything. Those work pals you are excited to see at these events are the source of all the ideas and good energy that sustains you… 🕸️🕷️🕸️ I could say a lot more. But just bravo to all those who contributed to these events this week (thrilled to say I was only a guest this time round and that felt rather smashing too) 👏👏👏

Just attended this webinar. I’d really recommend catching up on the recording when it gets uploaded. Important consideration for school leaders to consider how they model their engagement with research. Ask yourself not whether your school engages with research, but how well it does.

I told myself that I wasn’t good at networking. I told myself that networking is meant for extrovert. I told myself perhaps when I am more successful, I can network more effectively. Basically, these are excuses. I am concerned about what to say or what to do. I am concerned about being alone. I am concerned about being odd. Recently I had the privilege of attending the NUS CDE Alumni Relation Events, connecting with fellow alumni and faculty. Amidst the enriching discussions and networking, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own journey. How was it that I am now much better at networking? I just go to such event without any agenda (stress reliever) I just go to such event with an open mind to meet people (curiosity) I just go to such event to have a conversation (just a simple human-human talk) In the end, surprisingly, I had name cards of 3 distinguished Professional Engineer, doing well in their own field. It started as simple genuine questions: “How did you get to know of this event?” “How many times have you attended such events?” “What are you working on?” From there, it spirals into different conversations. Reflections on Day Two of Linkages Thompson Conference (University College of the North) Another day of presentations that provided us with more insight into the complexities of this region. Dr. Ramona Neckoway shared uncomfortable yet essential “reconciliation” stories, prompting honest discussions about shared truths and how trust is earned.  Dr. Ken S. Coates challenged us to envision the possibilities for the North with hope and ambition. David McCutcheon shed light on Apprenticeship Manitoba, vacancy rates, and the potential for harmonization between trades which highlighted a need for both recruitment and retention. Meanwhile, Jamie Dumont's insights on guiding principles of engagement emphasized the importance of collaboration and the necessity for economic sovereignty of Nations. Throughout these discussions, economic reconciliation emerged as a social responsibility with the potential for widespread benefits. Missing was candid conversations on health. Let's continue having honest conversations, forging a path toward a future where all in Northern Manitoba will thrive. The 2024 OCDA Conference will be happening on May 30th and 31st at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio.
