2024 is a super-election year and a critical test for democracy. In one of our most-read publications, the Trend Compendium, our experts take a closer look at the global state of democracy. The concerning message: autocratization trends and public dissatisfaction with democracy are on the rise in many democratic countries. ➡️ Many citizens in democratic countries believe that the political system needs to be comprehensively reformed. ➡️ Globally, there's a persistent decline in voter turnout, although the picture varies nationally. ➡️ Trust in national government is generally low. In Europe, the increase in populist parties' vote shares over the past two decades underscores a deepening divide in public sentiment. The future of democracy lies in the accountability of its leaders, the protection of fundamental freedoms, a free media, and an engaged citizen voice. As the 2024 election approaches, a new Free Press public-opinion poll suggests that people across the political and racial spectrum are very concerned about the deliberate spread of online misinformation and want policy reforms that address the problem. The poll found large majorities of Americans are concerned about election coverage in their communities. And 79% of Americans are concerned that the information they see online is fake, false or a deliberate attempt to confuse people. Learn more about the poll and its findings: freepress.net/2024poll

🏛️ Taking Advantage of Politics A Capture Team should never underestimate the potential impact that politics can have on an acquisition or in the selection of a winner in the competition. Since federal agencies get their funding from Congress, they are often subject to all kinds of political pressures. Understanding the political implications that are, or may be, associated with an opportunity can be crucial in determining the outcome of a competition. A Capture Team that can get members of Congress to lobby for their cause can provide the team with a key competitive advantage. Some of the reasons that might cause a member of Congress to lobby for a particular company include: → Company has a significant number of employees in their state or district; → Company is willing to relocate to their state or district; → Company is willing to provide an economic investment in their state or district; → Member of Congress wants to take credit for improving economic growth in their state or district; and/or → Member of Congress wants the political support of the company and its employees in future elections. From the Washington Post: “… The single bleakest data point about the health of our society concerns a difference across generations in that sense of attachment to democracy. As political scientists Yascha Mounk and Roberto Foa have reported in a few different guises, there has been significant generational decline in how people value democracy. In the starkest formulation, made in 2016, roughly 70 percent of Americans in the generation born before World War II consider it very essential, while not quite 30 percent of Americans who are now about 40 and younger do so. The targeting of #trustandsafety professionals and communication researchers serves a larger purpose: the intimidation of companies and institutions, including those pivotal in safeguarding fair elections and the integrity of our democracy. The toll on individuals’ well-being often gets powerful institutions to cave instead of defending their principles, policies, and even their people in some cases. Insights alert! 💡 We partnered with the The Graduate School of Political Management at The George Washington University to refresh our annual perspective on the state of the American Government, led by Stagwell Chairman, Mark Penn. Voters might not be sure the country is moving in the right direction, or have much confidence in our government and its federal agencies, but there is agreement on a few things: 🎖 The military is one of the units with a positive perception among voters likely due to a patriotic affinity and belief in our troops associated with the institution's public image.
