Do you want to know what an ally looks like? Look no further ⤵️ Joseph O'Sullivan One of my best friends, supportive connections, and one of very few people I’ve ever met who gives more of a damn about marginalised people’s welfare, justice, and integrity than he cares about how he is perceived. He’s my role model, I want to be more Jo. Why am I gloating about Jo? Well….. ❓The single question I was asked at Geotechnica after my talk last week was “how can men be better allies”. 👩🏻 Rebecca Heald and I have been talking about allyship recently. As have the BaB committee (we talk about it all the sodding time). And it’s a top topic for me, Katy Robinson, Bethany Holroyd CMIOSH, Faye Allen BSc (Hons), PgDL, FRICS, MAE, Clare Yelland (nee Friel), Jeremy Stockdale and Poppy Murray. Because we’ve noticed there seams to be even less true allyship than ever before. ⛑️Being a good ally isn’t hard. Here’s some how tos: 1. 🎠 Forget about being perceived as a saviour. If someone says “dude, I had it handled that time” then say “sorry buddy, trying to be a better ally”. Your pride might be bruised for about 10 seconds but next time the circumstance might require you to speak up and it’ll be one giant leap for equity. 2. ⚠️ If you’re worried about getting it wrong, don’t assume, ask first. In fact, always ask, consent is REALLY important, for many reasons, but one you may not realise is benevolence bias. Women aren’t as delicate as you think. 3. 📣 Use your voice, use your additional privilege, stand in solidarity at work or comment online when you see women’s work or voice being ripped to shreds. It’s mentally exhausting being the one to take the verbal kicking all the time. 4. 📖 If you feel like you don’t know where to begin - read an article, a book, ask a trusted female friend of her experiences and be open to learn. Not everyone is willing to relive trauma for you to learn, so be aware of that too. 5. 🧠 Don’t dismiss women’s or other marginalised people’s POV because it’s not the same as yours. Open your mind to growth and watch your strength as an ally flourishes. You don’t have to agree with it, but you also don’t have to be the winner of the conversation. 6. 🗣️If in doubt, think “what would Jo do?”. Yesterday I clipped on a tiny mic and took the BIG slot, talking to geotechnical professionals at Geotechnica. Jaws hung open, there were huge smiles from the women in the audience, and the safety of intersections will now go recognised by those attending. Thank you Julian Lovell & Calum Spires at Equipe Group for the opportunity. We need more of this. Influential voices need to understand the anatomical differences between biological sexes and ethnicity to be able to keep them safe, because we are still being outcast by the generalised safety rules that serve the over represented group. I see and hear this reason as being an inhibitor to career growth and longevity of people from diverse communities remaining in the industry. Correct the symptoms, search out your social value opportunities, work on the culture. RS UK & Ireland are a fabulous group with a PPE division thats growing! I can’t wait to see how their inclusive range gets bigger and better as time goes on and whatever else they may have up their sleeves. RS is definitely rising to the challenge of stocking quality brands, putting their money where their CSR policy is, and investing in women. 👌🏼Another thing that is incredibly important to understand about RS - they pay me for the work I do with them. They see how important my knowledge and Bold as Brass voice is. ❤️Big companies who ask me “what’s your price?” and SMEs who ask “would you like to work with me on a commission basis?” show how they are truelly investing in women and it’s not virtue signaling. ☮️These companies give me so much love in my belly because right now in the safety world there is far too much using of women, not valuing women’s time as equal, and ripping-off of women’s work.
