I’ve never really thought of the challenges and skills I learned in the military and how they convert to civilian life. But I’ve been reflecting recently. -Perserverence: most vets I know when they want something they move heaven and earth to get it. All avenues approached, all ideas stressed, and all options exhausted. Quit is not an option. Some people say it’s bullheaded…I simply believe it’s a knowledge and understanding that walking through the mud makes the hilltop look even better. - Adaptability: I’m currently trying to raise funds for my second feature film. And I’ve had to adapt and pivot my goals, aspirations, even fundraising strategies as I go. This is hard cause I have a well thought out plan that I know I can achieve. But convincing others you can perform those goals…that requires the flexibility to change your strategy to better suit them. - Memory: I have my pitch, story, production plan, marketing strategy, and multiple distribution strategies memorized and ready to pitch. But I’ve had to learn to forget the people who have ghosted me or outright disregarded me. I remember them only as a reminder that once I achieve this and everyone starts coming to me…to never do that to an individual who’s done the work. Nothing big or prophetic here…just some random internal ramblings that have been bouncing around my head! Let’s have a day, be great yall!

The Right Association imparts valuable life lessons! A group of teenagers had a bright idea: they decided to donate money to a good cause. To fund their mission, they went door to door in their neighborhood, offering their lawn-cutting services. The experiences they gained from this venture were truly remarkable: 1. Courage: They overcame their shyness and bravely knocked on each door. 2. Perseverance: They persisted until they secured a deal. 3. Responsibility: They allocated tasks efficiently. 4. Teamwork: They collaborated effectively as a team. 5. Time Management: They set a deadline for completing the work. 6. Fun: They found joy and satisfaction in their work. 7. Financial Gain: Surprisingly, their generous neighbors gave them more than expected. In the end, it's safe to say that everyone involved was delighted and content. 😊

As we step into the New Year, let’s cherish the power of relationships in fundraising! Reflecting on the past year, I’m immensely grateful for the incredible connections made and strengthened. Success happens where meaningful relationships are built and genuine. This is the heartbeat of meaningful change. 🙌🏾Building genuine relationships is more than just a strategy; it’s an ethos. It’s about empathetic listening, understanding needs, and fostering trust. 🌱 We are learning that cultivating these connections isn’t a one-time action but a continual investment. It’s nurturing bonds, celebrating successes, and being there through challenges. (Donor relations is more than “feel good”) Here’s to a year filled with purposeful partnerships, heartfelt collaborations, and transformative impact!

We’ve all experienced the frustration of moving – packing boxes, organizing donations, scheduling movers, coercing help from friends… But even the best-laid plans can’t make up for a B-team sent to help you on out moving day. Without the right support, your move could become a complete disaster. What does this have to do with financial Advisors? As you’re making your move to independence, perhaps *nothing* is more important than the team you have supporting you through your transition and beyond. That’s why Advisors who partner with us are FULLY SUPPORTED until the job is done. We don’t work with anything less than A players, which means our Advisors are guaranteed a rock star transition squad – and we’ll help staff your admin team, too. Looking for your dream team? Update on My Fabulous Fascist Summer Vacation. We are above $5,000 with 5 days to go to hit our goal of $7,000. One kind fellow sent money via PayPal instead. If you are having any trouble with the KS platform or just prefer to contribute directly, saving us the 8% platform and processing fees, do feel free to donate through PayPal at briankgruber at gmail. http://kck.st/3VAK5eu A full slate of interviews has been set up through Europe for the journey, with two in the can here in Thailand. Ruth Ben-Ghiat, considered by many one of the premiere experts on fascism in the U.S., wrote me a note saying the project "sounds like a good and necessary initiative!" Share the link, tell a friend, send some cash to fund the project, or drop me a line to find out more. I fly July 4 to Lisbon and either 1) the project will be funded (it's all or nothing on Kickstarter, no one gets their cards charged unless we hit the goal) and I begin my 30 day cross continent overland trek or) the project is not funded and I hang out in Portugal drinking port and eating petiscos. LET'S DO OPTION ONE! HERE'S THE LINK. Five days left.... http://kck.st/3VAK5eu

Authentic philanthropic facilitator connecting people and bold visions through meaningful engagement
Words matter. Do donors want a pitch, or do they want a conversation, over time, about philanthropic passions, values, and why the organization's mission is important to them? (And edited here: is this what we as philanthropic facilitators want? Do we want to “pitch” people? Back to original post) Should we aim for a partnership that is transformative or a business deal? Yes, another job description for a development director position. As a sector, we have allowed ourselves to become complacent with the words we use. I think to change how we approach philanthropy we can start with being thoughtful with language.
