Bringing top-notch care options closer to residents is critical to access and changes how many will experience treatment in the area. It means less cost to patients who travel out of town and pay for overnight stays. It means actually getting the care you deserve for those who are not able to overcome geographical and financial barriers to care in their region. Each day when you check-in to Mayo Clinic you are provided a brightly coloured sticker with the day’s name on it. In the evenings, patients and caregivers alike place their stickers on lampposts outside the main entrance, conveying a simple message to one another: You are not alone. I think about this-about offering comfort to others, about symbolism, about connection-quite a bit. Which makes me think about fire-walkers in San Pedro Manrique. It’s an ancient tradition, held the night before St. John’s Day, where community members walk 23-feet of a carpet of hot embers. Anthropologists had the opportunity to place biometric markers on the walkers and viewers and found something remarkable: As the fire-walkers’ heartbeat increased, so too did the heartbeat of their loved ones. A physiological bond exists beyond the emotional or cognitive one. Now, this makes sense, right? Our species has evolved precisely because of our ability to bond with and care for another. And yet, I think today we find a lot of things to distract us from connecting with others. We label. We write-off. We focus on finite goals instead of building lasting legacies. We fixate on how others are affecting us rather than considering how we may be affecting others. What if, for this week ahead, we assumed that our actions are like a sticker on a lamppost, passing along a message of hope, encouragement, and connection to others? What if we focused on trying to expand the “far place and time” for our touch to be felt? What if we built our enduring legacies this week?
