If your PPC account has no negative keywords in it you should be fired. I said this to the team last week and was met with gasps. Let me explain. If you're not adding negative keywords, you're giving Google licence to go after whatever searches and audiences it wants to, and you can bet it will find a way to spend your budget. If you're not preempting specific searches you don't want to show on then you haven't planned your campaign properly. If you're not finding search terms that aren't right and adding them into the account, then you clearly don't care about the account. So yes, if you don't add negative keywords in you should be fired. #ppc #googleads #sem

Interesting, if you optimise to revenue, do you definitely need negatives, or would it learn to get beyond this? Happy to be wrong…

You can find many spots to let Google play with your budget (go way over) than what you are expecting. This is what we experienced a couple of months ago when we forgot to select the location setting (people that are regularly in the targeted locations) and that consumed the whole of the budget in one week that was supposed to be spent over a month.

Fully agree. If you are not researching and identifying negative keywords, you are not conducting business effectively. Negative keywords act as FILTERS for the algorithm and for YOU as a marketer. 1. Negative keywords mean your client is NOT trying to serve EVERYONE, which is crucial in today's market. This allows you to write better ad copy that targets the specific personas your client is interested in. 🤗 2. Negative keywords show that you have refined your offers and landing pages, and you understand which groups are interested in your offerings. Thus, better conversions and better LEAD QUALITY. 😎 3. Negative keywords mean you are testing broader keyword match types and leveraging the automated capabilities of Google's algorithm, while still having a degree of CONTROL. 🤠

Not necessarily, that would really only apply if you're using a broad or phrase match strategy. Some clients might require single keyword ad groups with exact match keyword targeting. So, before anybody gets fired it would be important to know the difference in strategy for each account. I mean negatives will never hurt but firing somebody over it when it's not going to affect the results is unreasonable.

Kat Sale you could probably make the same argument about anyone who gasped at that statement! (Depending on why they gasped, I guess)

Search terms Negatives Search terms Negatives. It's the standard process in ppc, I have accounts barely touched for optimisations. And I laugh how they let it happen.

Couldn’t agree more from an agency perspective. I would go easier on in-house 360 marketers though as they’re also juggling plenty of other channels.
