Copenhagen in December is quite something. And I can’t complain about the view from my office at the Town Hall Square these days. But I can't wait for May next year. May means the World News Media Congress right here in Copenhagen. Was there ever a more opportune time for a media summit? I don’t think so. A few reasons why: --> Press freedom and independent journalism are under pressure in too many places. --> The rise of AI poses both opportunities and threats, or even worse if handled inadequately. --> The shift to digital in a world of social media mania requires constant transformative development. --> Sustainability, our generation's most important topic, but how do we crack the climate code in the media? --> The healthy business models of today differ immensely from those of the 2010s. How will they look in 2030? These are just some of the issues on the agenda of the World News Media Congress in Copenhagen 27-29 May. I know, I am biased. Yesterday we had a very sincere and open workshop with brilliant experts, looking for synergies in the fields of territorial innovation, digital transformation and sustainability. Many interesting suggestions, ideas and observations were discussed, would like to share some of them: + More research about failure (of policies and initiatives) + Change tech-push to the social-pull + People see the twin transition from their everyday life perspective + Cultural barriers like “not invented here” + Why we use cookies or google maps? – because it is convenient, same should be with public services + Opportunities of distributed governance + Difference of (need of) innovation in rural areas and cities + Branding “green deal industry” + Sectorial approach to innovation and digital transformation as the whole is too complex to manage + Better use and sharing of existing digital infrastructure in EU + (for all above we need) New family of (support/funding) instruments or significant upgrading of existing ones We plan to prepare a report which should be useful for all territorial levels and discuss possible ways forward showcasing some of the ideas. This week Louise Broekman, Head of the Global Research Council, will be hosting deep dive sessions with our global members on the key research areas to gather insights and case studies.
