Sportpark Soers, Aachen – Finalising Masterplan process Voting is important and everyone has a different opinion. Therefore, we are even more proud to announce that our urban masterplan for the future development of the Sportpark Soers in Aachen has been unanimously approved by the local politicians. The different committees advised to use the masterplan as a base for further detailed plans for subareas. To reach this goal we started a collaboration process between the local sport clubs and a team from the municipality, which will be continued. Read more about our project via link in comments. In the not so distant past, we would have opted to blow up dilapidated social housing towers and replace them with more horizontally distributed and ‘human scaled’ housing typologies. Today, however, a completely new societal relevant issue arises in the Flemish and Brussels region. Can we revive our fallen modernist high-flying infrastructure from a more circular design approach...in a way that improves the comfort of both residents and the organizations that manage a 'vivre ensemble' inside the infrastructure? Based on concise ethnographic research, the POLO Labs / Ney & Partners / Poelmans competition design proposal for Europark Linkeroever (Antwerp) shows how structurally drastic (expensive) interventions to the vulnerable hyperstatic casco can be largely avoided while living comfort improves significantly. Simple and efficient volume extensions not only contain (loggia) terraces, extra living space for each apartment and fire legislation-compliant circulation cores. They also transform the anonymous facades into more attractive and interactive screens. Indeed, the ‘obvious’ extreme makeover solutions have of course been known for some time. Yet there is no concrete design and process manual for successful renovations of social high-rise buildings. Every context is different and brings new challenges and obstacles. These often only come to light much later in the development process. Yet with each new design research and each concrete realization - see the recently completed renovation of 6 social residential towers on the Antwerp’s Luchtbal (POLO for Woonhaven) - the pool of experience and practically applicable knowledge grows to prepare the unfinished modernist project for landing. #europark #linkeroever #hoogbouw #renovatie #circulairbouwen #projectontwikkeling #ruimtevlaanderen Departement Omgeving Woonhaven Antwerpen
