Agrifood Innovation gets we excited, when there is a convergence of market needs and scientific breakthroughs. University of California, Davis scientists, in collaboration with University of California, Berkeley, are at the forefront of a groundbreaking initiative: using #CRISPR technology to edit the gut microbes of cattle, thereby reducing methane emissions. 🔬 High-Risk, High-Reward: This cutting-edge approach has the potential to achieve significant reductions in methane emissions, promoting more sustainable livestock farming practices. 🤝 Interdisciplinary Collaboration: This project unites leading experts in genomics and microbiology, demonstrating the power of collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges. ⏳ Challenges Ahead: While the promise is immense, practical questions remain. Who will bear the cost? Without subsidies or carbon credit schemes, implementation could be prohibitively expensive for farmers. Nevertheless, the growing demand for sustainable practices, exemplified by countries like Denmark and New Zealand introducing carbon taxes on livestock, underscores the urgency of this research. #Sustainability #ClimateChange #Agriculture #CRISPR #MethaneReduction #Innovation Ermias Kebreab https://lnkd.in/dWVDvHSS,

I am pleased to have helped enable the publication of this op-ed by Didier Toubia, CEO and Co-Founder of Aleph Farms. ״For cellular agriculture to achieve long-term growth and success, its first applications should be well-positioned to maximize both impact and value. In this regard, protein and fat products grown from cow cells fit the bill.״ Read the full piece in World Economic Forum. #nomatterwhat #sustainableagriculture #climateaction #justtransition #cellularagriculture #cultivatedmeat

Congratulations to biotech start-up and Science Creates company FOLIUM Science on receiving two grants from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to Harnessing CRISPR-Cas to reduce ammonia emissions in poultry production! FOLIUM Science's project, for which they've been awarded over £350,000, joins 24 other projects which have received a share of £12.2 million to support research and development to boost productivity, enhance sustainable practices and support economic growth in the agricultural and horticultural sectors. The FOLIUM Science team has developed a ground-breaking CRISPR-Cas based biotechnology called Guided Biotics® to deliver solutions for increased productivity at all points in the food and agriculture value chain, and this funding will advance their efforts. Find out more below. #deeptech #innovation #agriculture #sustainability
🚀 Further exciting news! 🚀 FOLIUM Science has recently been awarded two more grants through Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Farming Innovation Programme (FIP), delivered by Innovate UK. This will allow FOLIUM to continue to showcase the utility of our Guided Biotics technology to sustainably address major challenges within farming practices and to boost environmental resilience. Both awards allow us to continue to build our excellent relationship with the University of Bristol. 🦠 Campylobacter represents a major #onehealth challenge and zoonotic disease. Contaminated poultry is the number one cause of human infection; therefore, achieving "Campylobacter-free" status will secure a premium for poultry farmers. Currently the only effective controls are biosecurity measures and abattoir management that do not tackle the problem at its source. FOLIUM will develop innovative CRISPR/Cas based solutions (Guided Biotics) to address this unmet need in the sector and provide effective control of Campylobacter. 🌎💨 Ammonia is a highly caustic and irritating gas with major concerns for human health, animal welfare and productivity, and the ecological diversity of sensitive ecosystems such as our rivers and waterways. Agriculture is responsible for 88% of the UK's ammonia's emissions and livestock housing is a large contributor to this. Microbial enzymes, called ureases, are responsible for the rate-limiting step in ammonia production. Through this project, FOLIUM is harnessing its Guided Biotics platform to precisely modulate microbiomes and knockdown urease production. This demonstrates the capacity of our technology to mitigate troubling gases emitted in farming practices! This continues to show the massive scope and potential for #CRISPR to sustainably transform and revolutionize the way we produce our food and provide environmental resilience. Just where can we take it next?! 🌾🐄🐖 Karima Djacem Edward Fuchs Martin Woodward Enca Martin-Rendon, PhD, FRSB Tristan Cogan Sion C Bayliss https://lnkd.in/etbQfJCU

Thrilled to announce that I participated in a Seminar on ORGANIC FARMING AND ECO-FRIENDLY AGRICULTURE PRACTICES themed under HARVESTING on the Occasion of MAKAR SANKRANTI conducted by the National Service Scheme, Institute of Home Economics, University of Delhi on January 15, 2024 by Virtual Mode. Resource Person: MR. SANJEEV KUMAR CHAUDHARY Advisor, CSR and Youth Development Project Foundation for Agricultural Resources Management and Environmental Remediation (FARMER) Organic farming is a system of agricultural production based on the use of natural processes and resources- no chemicals (e.g. fertilisers or pesticides) or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are used- in order to obtain healthier and more nutritious food while protecting soil fertility, preventing the spread of pests and respecting the environment. It is a system that, instead of using agricultural inputs, carries out specific practices depending on the characteristics of each ecosystem. #organicfoods #organicfarming #agricultureandfarming #harvesting #foodtechnology #foodinnovation
