Karel's DIGest #58 - living brain - Neurotherapy in VR Dear readers, there are never enough examples of companies utilizing VR in healthcare. Let's explore one such innovator today. I'd like to introduce living brain, a company co-founded by Barbara Stegmann and Julian Specht in 2019, headquartered in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg. The team at living brain believes they can revolutionize rehabilitation. They are committed to ensuring that everyone deserves access to high-quality rehabilitation. To achieve this, they have merged psychological insights, therapeutic knowledge, and virtual reality. Starting with just an idea in 2017, they received MDD certification in 2020 and MDR certification in 2021. In 2023, they conducted a controlled-randomized clinical study that compared their innovative therapy, Teora® Mind, with standard computer-assisted training. The group using VR demonstrated significantly better results, particularly in the improvement of executive functions. living brain leverages neuroplasticity. For individuals suffering from illnesses or injuries, there is an opportunity to create new neural connections. They focus on a critical period when human cortex neurons are particularly malleable, using virtual reality to stimulate the creation of these connections. living brain's flagship product, Teora® Mind, is a software application that allows individuals with cognitive impairments to safely and controllably train everyday actions within a virtual environment. Teora® Mind provides cognitive training by simulating normal daily activities. living brain has meticulously crafted scenarios that closely mimic real-life tasks. Here are some activities you can perform: In the kitchen: - Putting away groceries - Stocking the refrigerator - Preparing fruit salad - Making coffee In the garden: - Sowing plants - Watering and harvesting tomatoes or strawberries In the beach shack: - Selling ice cream, cold drinks, or milkshakes In the relaxation room: - Watching Iceland’s waterfalls or the rocky coasts of Lanzarote The hardware components of the Teora® Mind system include: - Mobile VR glasses - Controller - Tablet Advantages of Teora® Mind: - Trains problems related to everyday life - Simple and user-friendly application - Location-independent access to cognitive therapy — even from home - Higher therapy frequencies - Study-tested contents - Higher motivation thanks to playfully processed content - Flexible accompaniment and support by a treatment supervisor Source of information: My own experience at living brain booth at DMEA - Connecting Digital Health, living brain's LinkedIn profile, and websites https://livingbrain.de/en/ and https://lnkd.in/e946JXQW
