But before we dive into the deep end, let's consider a more strategic approach – a decarbonisation pathway. Here's a breakdown of a logical hierarchy for industrial emission reduction: 1. Efficiency First: - Consume Less: Reducing demand through smarter design and product lifecycles. - Recycle & Reuse: Closing the loop on materials minimizes the need for virgin resources. - Electrification: Switching from fossil fuels to clean electricity wherever possible. - Low Carbon Fuels: Utilizing biofuels or synthetic fuels produced with renewable energy. - Oxyfuel Combustion: This technology uses pure oxygen instead of air for combustion. This significantly reduces the burden on H₂ and CCS, making them more manageable and cost-effective for the remaining emissions. Decarbonisation is a marathon, not a sprint. Addressing efficiency and new technologies first creates a solid foundation for the long-term implementation of H₂ and CCS. This step-by-step approach paves the way for a smoother, more sustainable industrial transition.
