The history of intra-continental maritime transport is rich and fascinating, dating back to ancient times in the Mediterranean during the Minoan civilization of Crete and later during the Macedonian, Roman, and Byzantine cultures. At a European level, the development of coastal shipping was aided by the Hanseatic League, a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and their market towns.
The European short-sea shipping market has seen significant growth thanks to policy measures advocated by the European Commission since 1985. In order to complete the Internal Market by 31 December 1992, the Commission recognized the need for a transport policy that would promote the free and seamless movement of people and goods.
Although there is no universally accepted definition of 'short sea shipping,' it typically refers to feeder services, intra-European trade services, and cabotage services. In line with the European Union's policy objectives, short-sea shipping encompasses conventional and fast ships, ports, cargo handling techniques, information systems networks, logistics, intermodal, and multimodal transport systems.
This MasterClass explores the structure of the European short-sea shipping market and highlights the key elements that make it a highly competitive alternative to road and rail transportation. Join us to learn how we can shift goods from road to sea and help shape the future of European shipping.
