Here's a story where I got to act as editor and reporter — just one of the many perks of working at Business Insider, where we can wear many hats while also exploring fascinating topics, like Wall Street's underground drug culture. The best part was working with the many amazing reporters (7!) who made this grand collaboration so fun and easy. Thank you for all your Alex Nicoll, Dakin Campbell, CFA, Alex Morrell, Hayley Cuccinello, Emmalyse Brownstein, Bradley Saacks and Bianca Chan https://lnkd.in/eUf2giJA

making two tough movies and drunkenness Whipping scene in “12 years a slave.” 1. McQUEEN [Black director] We couldn’t shy away from it, we had to go to very dark places. But in the evenings, we would all come together, we would hug each other, we would eat together, we would get drunk together, and then we would come back the next day. It was beautiful. 2. Film getting raves, “Fair Play”, about a couple where woman pulls a financial coup and boyfriend freaks. The audience response at preview screenings has been so interesting — clapping, gasping, even yelling at the characters. People were reacting like it’s a horror movie, and that was very exciting to me. The intention was always to create this balloon of tension that you don’t know when or where it’s going to pop, but once it does, it just becomes this total dogfight. This feels like a dangerous date movie. You may end up facilitating some divorces. Couples that have come to early screenings, you see them start to fight on their way back to the car — like the man will say something, and then his girlfriend will slowly look at him like, “That’s what you thought?” So yeah, I can’t wait to break people up. I’m here for it. Using financial institution setting. The highs and lows, the stakes of that kind of work environment, felt similar to the stakes of the film and TV industry: You slip up once, and you can be out. And the work-hard play-hard aspect, too, I feel like is in both. It was another male-dominated industry that is hard for women to come up in — and when they do, they’re treated differently, as we all know. How did you go about learning the jargon? I took a bunch of hedge fund guys out for drinks! [Laughs] I got them drunk and just started asking them very simple questions. It was really like learning a new language, like Spanish or coding or something. And honestly that was the easy part. Writing the emotional arcs of the characters, that was much more challenging.

"I love you just as you are!" Mr. Rogers had a way with words, right?! We often perceive ourselves solely through the lens of our professional identities. But here's the real plot twist - we're much more than that. Apart from our identity, we are potentially way more valuable just as we are because of our access to three other values: our relationship capital, access to monetary capital, and connection to a unique team of skilled teammates. Think about it. Our networks are a maze of potential opportunities, a cascade of connections rippling out from those closest to us to those we aspire to meet. That's relationship capital. Monetary capital? Clear as day. Access to funds can fast track business ventures and investments, especially for all the real estate aficionados out there. And then, of course, our team. A diverse squad of individuals with unique skill sets, ready to tackle any challenge that comes our way. So on this Happy Saturday, let's celebrate that we are not just professional, lawyers, doctors, accountants, or whatever... we are valuable just the way we are.

In Richard C. WIlson's fireside chat with billionaire Carl Fischer, one of the key insights is how transparency leads to deals. Some investors will tell you immediately, "I'm not putting more than 5% in any single asset class." Transparency like that leads to deals. Asking the right questions leads investors to act based on their goals vs. your suggestions. Watch the full chat in our Youtube channel: https://lnkd.in/gThK2_4x
