The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBS Association) is launching a groundbreaking initiative to improve maternity care in over 600 US hospitals, with a strong focus on closing racial and ethnic disparities. Benefits for everyone include: - Higher quality and safer maternity care. - Reduced racial and ethnic disparities in care. - Cost savings for BDC+ facilities. - Improved birthing experiences through doula support. - Enhanced preparedness for obstetric emergencies. I can only imagine the psychological impact on expecting mothers or women of childbearing age who are left to "fend for themselves". Addressing the rising maternity and infant mortality rates due to the closure of maternity units in rural hospitals is a critical public health concern. This directly and indirectly impacts us all as an interconnected society. Closing maternity units in rural hospitals impacts access to timely care, increases complications, and higher rates of home births compounded by inadequate neonatal care and detrimental psychological impact on expecting mothers. It requires a comprehensive approach involving healthcare policy changes, increased funding for rural healthcare, and strategic planning to ensure equitable access to essential maternity and neonatal services. It's imperative to prioritize the health and well-being of expecting mothers and infants, regardless of their geographical location, to bridge the existing healthcare gaps and save countless lives. #maternalandinfantlivesmatter #publichealthconcern #raiseeveryvoice #ruralhospital

MBRRACE-UK has published two Perinatal Confidential Enquiry reports, Thursday 14 December, which identify where improvements in care may have made a difference to outcomes for women and their babies, alongside inequalities in maternity care received by Black and Asian. Supporting personalised, safe and compassionate maternity care is a priority for the College, and we will now carefully consider the recommendations in these reports, so that we can take these forward through our work as educators, in our clinical guidance and our quality improvement programmes. We know that maternity teams are working tirelessly at a time of unprecedented demand, with many teams understaffed and impacted by high vacancy rates. These pressures are undoubtedly impacting the care that some women and their families receive. It is crucial that the Government commits to sufficient, long-term NHS investment for staff recruitment, retention and training, which underpins safe and compassionate care for patients.
