When you meet one of your heroes and you swap storm stories and you lead with your management fails, move to how you volunteered during Florence at the Friday Center under her leadership, mention how you really appreciated her leadership and finish with "you are everything I want to be and more." And she replies, "You were a start-up, I inherited the American Red Cross." My most prized possession. I was expecting a signature not a note. Be mindful she carried on a full conversation while signing and never missed a beat. Her leadership tips. 1. Hire slowly. The pain of a vacancy is easier to deal with than the pain of a bad hire. 2. Hire diversity; people who think differently. My heroes do not play sports. They save lives and empower others to do the same!

There is SO So much I LOVE about this! A few Authentic leaders/colleagues I definitely can nominate…how about you? It’s a lesson we try and instill in our kids. A vision most parents likely have. Love the shift into the vision “to be” in business too! Have you ever sensed someone wasn't being authentic? The same rings true in leading our teams. The key to having a team that has your back is to keep it real, every step of the way. I firmly believe that my team stands by me because I lead with authenticity. What they see is what they get! I'm not afraid to show vulnerability, admit when I don't have all the answers, or own up to my mistakes. Leading with authenticity means being transparent about what's happening or not. When you lead authentically, your team knows they can trust you = Strong/Trusting relationships. I’ve been thinking lately about the differences between leadership in corporate America vs small business and it got me thinking about the book, Endurance, about Shackelton’s expedition to Antartica in 1914. If you aren’t familiar, Ernest Shackleton led an expedition to circumnavigate Antartica. Things did not go well. It is the most harrowing book I’ve ever read, and it’s talked about as one of the greatest books on leadership. Not one man died on the expedition, and realistically - they all should have died, but somehow Shackleton kept them alive. From a leadership perspective, what I find most interesting is that Shackleton was not a great hiring manager by today’s standards - the deciding factor in his hiring of many of the men, was that they looked funny or if they could sing. He didn’t subject people to 7 corporate interviews spaced out over 3 months. What struck me was Shackelton’s overwhelming devotion and compassion for the men on his team. He spent every second thinking about the survival of every member of his team. I’m convinced this is why they survived. One of the things I love about many of the best small business owners I know, is that they care about their teams like Shackleton did, at a level corporate America cannot match.
