During the past six months, I visited #Japan twice. The in-person connections I was able to make were a major highlight of those trips. ❤️ Besides reconnecting with friends whom I haven't seen in a while, I had the pleasure of visiting 4 PitchBook clients & industry contacts (GP and LP) in Tokyo. It was a special opportunity to thank them in-person for having graciously shared their market insights of the regional ecosystem with me. Without the 20+ conversations I had with Japan-based market participants, there was no way I could have produced in-depth research reports on the Japanese VC market. Robust data alone doesn't make great research. Only the intersection between solid data and a profound understanding of the market through boots-on-the-ground, qualitative observations spark insightful, comprehensive and timely research. But that's not the best part. The most exciting component of in-person conversations is the opportunity to really get to know the other party. The age of Zoom makes it easier than ever to connect with people across the globe. But nothing replaces face-to-face conversations, where you truly get a chance to know the other person beyond straight business talks. Coffee chats also spark ideas - such as potential collaboration and exchange of thoughts - that you likely never had when initially walking into the room. The Japanese venture market is a small but mighty ecosystem. I'm excited to keep monitoring how the landscape evolves and look forward to visiting Tokyo again by the end of this year, hopefully building more in-person connections. PS: Picture shows "hegi soba" - a must-eat if you visit Niigata Prefecture. Kojimaya is a great place to try this soba for the first time. 🍜

I'm learning that in Japan if you want to find new business, you have to get out and about. I can find a million things to do at my desk that feel productive but don't lead to business growing. Getting out and meeting new people cuts through all that and leads to new things happening. My best recent lead came from a random chat beside a coffee machine. Thanks to Stefan Nilsson for beating this drum over and over and reminding me of this lesson. Anyone have any go-to meetups for networking in Tokyo or Yokohama? I'll be at the next one. PS - if you are a a hedge funder - check out what Stefan does. #japan #japanbusiness #japanrealestate

Japan Business Development Specialist | Proven Results | Grow Fast on Sales & Profitability➡️Find the perfect Distribution Partner➡️Build Lifetime Customer Relationships➡️Win on Quality ➡️30+Years Japan Market Experience
The Market Japan: Does it sound familiar? We had the perfect strategy in place. The strategic blueprint that worked everywhere, however, the same didn't work in Japan. Why? We had to learn it the hard way. The brutal facts sounded simple but at the same time complicated: "Japan needs to be understood!". History keeps repeating itself. Some companies come to Japan and think they show the Japanese customers how the business will be done and want to conquer the Japanese market in no time. Then, two years later, they woke up to discover their strategy didn't work. Then you have companies complaining about the business environment, complaining "that the market is closed" while not trying to understand and adjust to it. Then you have companies that give up and leave Japan to regret it a few years later. However, you also have successful companies that planned their market strategy very well. They learned from their experience in Japan, adjusted, absorbed the business culture, understood, and moved within the market forces. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. Successful companies modeled best practices. Successful companies use experienced and qualified support. Secure our experience and knowledge when you create your Strategic Roadmap for Japan. If you are interested, this is a good timing. Three Strategic Roadmap project spots are available for the next quarter, starting Oct. 1, 2023.
