Assault survivor, here, raised by a caretaker who was an assault survivor.
Thank you, Lisa Durden, p.g.a. for sharing your tragic journey. Say it louder for the people in the back! You didn't deserve that!
Readers looking to be a part of the solution, please take a moment of pause to deeply understand what survivors of life-changing violence are made to go through as young people and throughout life.
Be reminded:
⏳ We have so many ideas on when a person should "get over it" and subscribe to seeming well adjusted as the impact lives on—appropriate to the timeline of people centered on their own comfort.
🛑 It's a social norm to refer to those who are targeted as "victim" for the arduous task of advocating for themselves through a myriad of appropriate emotions across "DeanA BarDepA," spanning denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. This is a merciless process and not everyone makes it through stronger.
👉🏾 It's sadly common to blame Black girls for being targeted by live-changing violence, including SA and related forms of cruelty by calling them "fast" or other forms of toxic math that excludes the role dominant caste supremacy culture has and continues to plays in historic and general trauma, including the exploitation of young Black girls. The deeply rooted bias encouraged in the system we are in allows us to flirt with survivors of violence as having somehow deserved it. We then have the nerve to shame people who are unable to restore and repair their nervous system that was impacted by the trauma.
💯 As a perk of dominant caste supremacy culture—we give a pass to violent s*xual offenders. Newsflash, if you fantasize there's a r*pe light, you are not doing the right math!
🤱🏾 Out of all r*pists, 99% are men and 1% are women women—relationships of survivors are damaged.
I stand by a hope that we legalize self defence and other forms of immediate accountability for the SA epidemic that some who have mothers, wives, daughters, and loved ones who are women who still dare to believe isn't their problem or that it will work itself out. It hasn't in all this time, it's worse.
Be different. Learn about trauma-informed awareness and trauma-informed practices to be a part of the solution and get clear on what role systems transformation and education plays in eliminating this devastating issue by mostly men who feel entitled to violently assaulting and harming others at will, often with impunity.

I Just Learned That One Of My Attempted Rapists Lance Has Died! When I Was 13, He And His Other 13 Year Old Friend Bruce Were Both Holding Me Down And Prying My Leggs Open While Trying To Pull My Pants Down. I Screamed And Kicked And Screamed And Kicked And Screamed! They Eventually Let Me Go! I Do Realize That My Screaming And Kicking Is Not What Ultimately Saved Me. It Was Sheer Luck That Those Two Monsters Changed Their Minds. Because Those Two Boys Had The Absolute Power And Strength To Carry Out The #SexualAssault. I Am So Thankful That They Decided Not To! Children Can Be And Many Are #SexualPredators Too! #OMGIsItOnlyMe??

In anticipation of "Rooting for Everybody BLK" taking place at The Chelsea House NYC on August 7, 6 - 8 pm (ET), I've shared a few thoughts on host Nikki Adebiyi, and the collective "why" of ForbesBLK members from the UK, US, and Africa who will discuss what it looks like to proactively champion the African diaspora.

** THIS WEEK - YOUTH OF COLOR! **
Join a ** FREE ** Linkedin LIVE discussion about the importance of what Ingrid Cockhren, M.Ed. refers to as #EquityInPractice, a virtual workshop and on-demand series that educates on anti-pathology approaches to mental health care for people of color.
We've paired each fee-based virtual workshop—for women(+), men, and youth of color—with ** FREE ** Linkedin LIVE events because access matters.
🎙 LinkedIn LIVE audio discussion about youth of color—July 23 @ 1:30 - 2:30 pm (ET)
💻 Equity in Action virtual workshop that focuses on youth of color—July 24 @ 1:30 - 4:00 pm (ET)
Ingrid created this series to ensure that mental health professionals and other leaders have a foundational understanding of racial and historical trauma and can adopt anti-pathological approaches to better serve the Black people in their care.
My interest in partnering with Ingrid on this virtual workshop and on-demand series is inspired by witnessing a world without access to interventions, protection, and medical care during my early years. I would later learn my challenges were intersectional as a result of a deeply flawed system that trickles down to communities and families. It took what feels like a lifetime to process life-changing violence I witnessed and experienced as an adolescent at the hands of a feral law enforcement official and then caretaker.
Imagine an informed care-system that doesn't have to learn from its clients. Putting equity into practice could change everything.
I’ll drop links and helpful information in the comment thread below.

** AUGUST NEW MEDIA ALERT! **
Where are all of my independent consultants, subject matter experts, entrepreneurs, founders, innovators, skill-driven change agents, makers, and savvy multi-hyphenates with a newsworthy story to tell?
🔥 I've got a hot take: Stop waiting to be discovered by the overnight sensation fairy through minimal efforts—that’s an urban myth. Instead, build your relationship with new independent media outlets to help each other grow.
🔐 Key takeaway: Forge partnerships, build relationships, and support other innovators that take the risk to begin new ventures. Don’t wait until everyone does it first. Remember, we don’t get paid in doubts!

Nikki Adebiyi & ForbesBLK#Impact Circle fam, thank you for picking up where Issa Rae’s classic perspective left off to have a powerful discussion on ‘rooting for everybody Black’— and extending an invitation to me as an event partner and to join fantastic social impact innovators as a speaker!
Earlier this year, as the co-facilitator of an official side event for the United Nations Permanent Forum of People of African Descent (PFPAD)—to discuss education for kids of African descent—I felt a sense of belonging, purpose, and interconnection. Not a few months later, I officially became a New York State Trauma-Informed Network and Resource Center (TINRC) Advisory Council member. These and other restorative experiences have signified a powerful shift in the ways I view equity, access, collaboration, trauma-informed practices, healing, and reparations.
The timing couldn’t be better to circle up and continue important discussions about solidarity, liberation, and the full potential of People of the Global Majority (PGM) across the caste gap.
On August 7th, join us at The Chelsea House from 6:00 - 8:00 pm for “Rooting for Everybody BLK” Community Conversation hosted by Nikki Adebiyi.
Featuring:
✦ Nikki Adebiyi, a London-based activist and Founder of Bounce Black—a platform that champions the workplace and wellbeing needs of Black professionals.
✦ Ayisha Miracle Mendez, Community Manager at ForbesBLK
✦ Abdul Tubman, MBA, Social Justice & Equity Thought Leader and Director of Operations at C.O.R.N.E.R.S. Community
✦ Kahshanna Evans, Community Building Through Communications Strategist & Founder, Kissing Lions Public Relations, New York State Trauma-Informed Network and Resource Center Advisory Council Member
✦ Nnemoma Chukwumerije, Founder and Breathwork Facilitator, Essence of Freedom, a wellness platform dedicated to helping individuals and women of color recognize their innate ability to heal themselves.
I’ll drop a link in the comments below with additional information and details.
See you there!
