Is the governance debate at #OpenAI about to blow up again? The departures of Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike suggest that issues of AI ethics are causing difficulties. One quote from the FT article. “We urgently need to figure out how to steer and control AI systems much smarter than us,” Leike wrote. “I joined because I thought OpenAI would be the best place in the world to do this research. However, I have been disagreeing with OpenAI leadership about the company’s core priorities for quite some time, until we finally reached a breaking point.”  The launch of #ChatGPT4o shows just how powerful OpenAI's core product is. There are several things that are different about this new version of ChatGPT and it is the combination of these advances that raises the ethics debate. Here are the standouts. 1️⃣ The combination of media types - video, voice, text. Whilst we were dealing with ChatGPT through a text-based interface, its limitations were much clearer. 2️⃣ It's getting much more realtime. The latency has dropped. You can have a conversation with it. 3️⃣ Emotive AI. This is the big one. Ok, it might be a little phoney but this is an area of #genAI that is improving fast. It also raises huge issues around potential deception and let's call it "emotional engagement" with non-human entities. We seem ethically fine with emotional engagement with animals - pets, in particular - and nature. Broadly speaking, we look less favourably on people who engage with non-living things. A very informative article by Steven Levy on what OpenAI really wants. In this article, Levy is trying to break the anathema about AGI by giving us insights about the pedigree of the founders of OpenAI through various anecdotal references about them. Well, I personally believe that AGI is here to stay and that people and organizations must adopt and leverage it. Perhaps, that's one of the ways how all of us can make AGI safer, ethical, and transparent. After all, the more one uses a muscle, the stronger it gets, right!

Well, this is disturbing news. As reported earlier this week, one of OpenAI's co-founders (Ilya Sutskever) has left the company. And as previously reported, Ilya and Sam Altman didn't share the same views on the importance of #AI safety.
