Square Future of Commerce: 2024 Edition is out! Top themes across Restaurant, Retail, and Health & Beauty 👇 ▶ Retail Insights: Growth is top of mind for retailers in the United States as well, with 57% of those surveyed saying they’re eager to expand in the coming year – though they are split on whether to prioritize brick and mortar (49%) or online offerings (51%). With 58% of consumers typically shopping in-store and 42% online, the research emphasizes that keeping in touch with customers via digital channels is key no matter where or how they choose to shop. ▶ Restaurant Insights: 100% of surveyed restaurateurs in the United States say they plan to expand their businesses in the next 12 months through offering new products or opening additional locations, and 79% report feeling more optimistic about the future of their restaurants. At the same time, three in four consumers say they expect to pull back on restaurant spending in 2024 – so restaurateurs need to invest in more efficient ways to find and engage customers in order to see return on their investments. ▶ Beauty Insights: The report also includes findings on beauty and how consumers approach finding (and sticking with) beauty care providers – 62% of those surveyed have a preferred provider, though 69% have switched due to factors like overly long wait times. Consumers have also signaled interest in turning to beauty or personal care providers for online tutorials (27%), in-person classes (26%), and at-home DIY boxes (23%). On the heels of our Q3 earnings in which we exceeded $7 billion in digital sales – we have continued to implement and grow our digital and technology capabilities.   One example is our new Automated Inventory Management system that we now have in over 7,000 restaurants across the U.S. to support restaurant general managers on inventory efficiencies. The changing of guard in the restaurant universe. William Blair recently reported that "off-premises eating remains more frequent than in-person eating" and noted "for digital ordering, more consumers are ordering directly through a restaurant’s app or website versus third-party marketplaces.” Here’s why we anticipate a seismic transformation in the restaurant tech landscape over the next five years. The online ordering behemoth, Olo, emerged in 2005 amidst a vastly different market environment. At that time, POS and in-store ordering reigned supreme. Olo positioned itself as a supporting player, tailored to serve this prevailing paradigm. And with that, infusing the character and personality of a brand in the digital world was not a priority. However, the digital realm has undergone a paradigm shift. Today, digital ordering is the primary revenue generator, with customers engaging more frequently with brands online than in-person. Consequently, a restaurant’s digital presence now dictates its success. As we look ahead, digital ordering platforms will evolve into the nucleus of a restaurant's operations, relegating POS systems to a supporting role. This evolution will prompt the emergence of innovative, forward-thinking companies poised to reshape both the POS and digital ordering landscapes. Amidst this transformation, legacy systems dating back nearly two decades are rapidly becoming obsolete. In this new era, a platform designed merely as a supporting player can never achieve the status of a business's cornerstone.
