Three tech hardware news:
- The rabbit inc. R1 is a novel device resembling a Tamagotchi, designed in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, that offers an alternative to traditional mobile app usage on Android or iOS, operating primarily through voice commands to control other hardware. Unlike conventional AI chatbots using Large Language Models, the R1 employs a Large Action Model trained on user interfaces, enabling it to understand and interact with websites and apps on the user's behalf, aiming to reduce distractions and increase efficiency.
The R1 already sold 10,000 units on its first day at CES 2024 for $199, and is praised for its potential to simplify tasks like booking vacations, ordering rides or food, and managing reminders, acting as a digital assistant.
- Elon Musk announced that the first human received a Neuralink brain-computer interface implant, stating the patient is recovering well with promising initial neuron spike detection. Neuralink, which seeks to aid individuals with conditions like quadriplegia and ALS, has not released further patient details, but Musk mentioned the device's potential to control phones or computers through thought.
Neuralink, amidst 40 ongoing brain-computer interface trials, has FDA approval for clinical studies but faces uncertainties regarding device effectiveness and safety, with concerns about risks like brain hemorrhage.
- Apple's Vision Pro (VR headset) is about to be released this friday and between 300-400k units are expected to be sold this year as we see growing metaverse quality and demand for top notch experience. The headset is designed to enhance various business sectors by enabling immersive communication, improving customer experiences, increasing productivity, introducing new business models, and offering better data visualization. Apple's hardware features a dial to switch between virtual and augmented reality modes, aiming to revolutionize experiences in retail, sports, concerts, and outdoor activities.
An example for business use is transformation of retail shopping with augmented overlays providing product information, enhance sports viewing with real-time stats and analysis, create interactive concert experiences with augmented visual effects, and offer enriched outdoor experiences like augmented reality hiking, showcasing extinct or endangered animals in natural settings.
