Business activities significantly contribute to environmental degradation by polluting air, water, and soil, emitting greenhouse gasses, depleting natural resources, and generating massive waste that harms biodiversity, ecosystems, and human health. Yet too often – despite the clear laundry list of environmental offenses – we give businesses a free pass. We don’t blink an eye. Because in our society, business is king and profits prevail, regardless of the consequences. But what if it doesn’t have to be that way? What if we fundamentally redesigned businesses so that they work in harmony with the planet, not in contest? In my latest Third Nature Investments blog, I discuss the need to build innovative business models that integrate ecological health with economic success and outline key tenets of those new models. Unlocking €1.8bn in benefits for EU businesses through nature restoration? 🦎 The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership's latest report reveals that businesses stand to gain €1.8bn through nature restoration efforts. The esteemed Leaders Group, featuring industry giants like The Coca-Cola Company, Unilever, EDF, and Iberdrola, highlights the pressing need for the EU to address the current nature crisis urgently. ‼ Ursula Woodburn, Director of Corporate Leaders Group Europe, emphasizes the pivotal role of healthy ecosystems and encourages organizations to take actionable steps towards nature restoration within their operations, aligning with the European Green Deal and the EU Nature Restoration Law. Despite recent contention in the European Parliament, the report underscores the necessity for ambitious legal targets to incentivize business engagement and secure necessary investment levels. 🔛 Tim Christophersen, Vice President of Climate Action at Salesforce, highlights the interconnectedness of nature and climate, emphasizing the importance of holistic commitments and investments. The report showcases successful examples of businesses like EDF Energy and Cemex actively engaging in nature restoration, demonstrating the positive impact and potential benefits for both the environment and their operations. Even though many corporations are not motivated intrinsically but more financially, it is still good to see more and more shifting from focusing on carbon only to a more holistic approach considering biodiversity too, asking themselves: "What are our company's long-term nature restoration & preservation goals, and how do we plan to be a catalyst for a more sustainable future?" #naturerestoration #biodiversity #sustainability #mrv #naturepreservation

Senior Technical Manager for 1t.org US @ American Forests | International Nature-Based Solutions, Natural Climate Solutions, Forest Ecosystem Restoration, Carbon Markets, Forest Carbon Accounting, Biodiversity Markets
"And the inconvenient truth is that, right now, forests are worth more dead than they are alive. Converting forested land for agricultural use or urban or infrastructure development creates jobs and funds public services. This economic reality is why most of today’s rich world destroyed much of its forests as it developed. But tropical forest countries are working to create a different reality. They want the world to work with them, to reset the incentives in favor of keeping forests standing. And carbon markets are an important part of this effort, with the potential to tip the economic balance toward forest protection and restoration. This is why we need them work. To dismiss all investment in forest carbon credits as greenwashing isn’t just dangerous for forests, it’s also unsupported by evidence. Research shows that companies engaging in the carbon market are nearly twice as likely to be decarbonizing their own operations, and to be investing three times more in reducing their emissions than those that don’t. We shouldn’t gloss over bad practice. But we also shouldn’t overlook the years of work done by governments to ensure forest carbon transactions can be done with integrity." https://lnkd.in/e_k7Vq9S

Nature-based solutions are emerging as a beacon of hope amidst our pressing environmental challenges. With climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation at the forefront, these solutions offer not only a cost-effective pathway but also a multitude of ecological and societal rewards. Yet, a stark contrast exists in the financial landscape: eco-detrimental activities receive over 30 times more funding than beneficial nature-based initiatives. In 2022, governments led the charge, providing 82% of the $200 billion allocated to nature-based solutions, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Private finance lags behind, with a mere 18% contribution, suggesting an untapped reservoir of opportunity. The imbalance is jarring: $7 trillion annually funneled into nature-negative activities while only $200 billion goes towards healing our planet. The call to action is clear—we must pivot our financial resources towards sustainable investments that foster biodiversity and combat climate change. Shocking still is the $1.7 trillion spent on harmful subsidies by governments in just one year. Imagine the transformation if these funds were redirected towards ecological restoration and conservation. With only a 20% increase in nature-based solution financing by 2030, we could significantly bolster ecosystem resilience. The private sector, currently at a modest $35 billion investment in nature-based solutions, holds a latent promise for growth, particularly in sustainable land management. It's high time the financial sector aligns with long-term environmental benefits. Global Canopy's role is pivotal, providing the data and insights needed to steer this shift. Their collaboration with various stakeholders is imperative in maximizing the potential of nature-based solutions. In summation, while the environmental benefits are clear, the financial commitment to nature-based solutions remains tepid. It's imperative for governments, financial institutions, and businesses to realize the urgency and invest in a sustainable tomorrow. Let's unlock the true potential of nature-based solutions and pave the way for a thriving future. I'm convinced that redirecting investments is not just necessary, it's inevitable for a sustainable future. What are your thoughts? How can we bridge this financial gap to better support the environment? Share your insights below. #NatureBasedSolutions #SustainableInvesting #EnvironmentalConservation Original article: https://lnkd.in/edCR8MD5

Information Systems Architect @ Bank of Greece | Designing sustainable realities. Views expressed here are my own.
Take a break for a minute. Forget the endless reports about #sustainable natural environment, all these breathtaking pictures of our ecosystems, the charts and the equations, the damage evaluations and future projections, the case studies and the glamorous ESG reports. Take the nearest exit to the countryside, river, lake, forest, sea... Seek the local environmental information centre and speak to local experts about biodiversity and how human LIFESTYLE is threatening the ecological balance. Pass this knowledge to the next generation and focus on how you can enculturate sustainable practices into your everydayness. Now, you may continue reading that report. There you go. You are half the way to leave behind that greenwashing mindset that is interwovened into your habitat. It is not just the ethical thing to do. It is what will make you a free citizen. The choice is yours. The picture below is from Kastoria's lake, earlier today.
