Sharing our new AI in Action research today co-authored by leaders across Google that highlights the role AI can play in accelerating process on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially in the critical areas of health, education, and climate action. We also shared what we've learned about responsible deployment and how we invest in more tools like Google's Data Commons to enable wider AI benefits. Read more -- http://goo.gle/sdgs-ai -- and let me know what you think. With the International Telecommunication Union's AI for Good Summit kicking off, I'm reflecting on how much has changed since the first one in 2017. We've seen a 300% increase in the number of AI applications for the SDGs since the research that McKinsey Global Institute published in 2018. AI is already driving tangible benefits thanks to leadership from so many of those on the ground working to make new solutions possible -- we highlighted ARMMAN, Quill.org, and Climate TRACE in the report, and there are so many more we've had the privilege to work with. I'm excited about the immense potential still ahead as we link arms to drive more scientific progress and real-world impact. Big thanks to our research collaborators and all of those who made this possible, especially Joel Straker, Alexander Díaz, Daniel Altman, Jane Woodall, Melike Yetken Krilla, Andre Nakazawa, Anna Koivuniemi, and our whole Google.org team. #AIforSDGs #SDGs #AIforGood

I was very happy to meet and listen to Ian Bremmer, Founder and President of the Eurasia Group, at a panel organized by the Council on Foreign Relations on the "Impact of #AI on Society." A few highlights to emerge from the Panel Discussion include: - The world is moving toward a technopolar world order dominated by giant technological companies with a monopoly over #AI. - #Governance models on #AI, particularly among Microsoft, Meta, Google and Elon Musk, will be more consequential to society than geopolitical decisions taken by states. - The downside of this trend is that while governments manage societal risk, companies are more concerned with investors' risk.

### LinkedIn Post 🌍 **The Future of AI in Europe: Mobilization Needed Now!** 🌍 Artificial intelligence represents a major advancement with immense potential to transform our society, from healthcare to education, and beyond. However, in the face of American corporate dominance, it is crucial that Europe mobilizes right now. The European initiative to invest one billion euros in a European cloud is a step in the right direction, but it is far from sufficient. We need a concerted and massive effort, involving all industrial, economic, and digital actors, to invest several billion euros in creating robust generative AI and European cloud infrastructure. AI giants and transhumanist billionaires are already shaping the future, often to the detriment of our democratic values. Let’s not leave Europe behind. Let's draw inspiration from, or even appropriate, American technological advancements to strengthen our own infrastructure. As a European citizen, I commit to informing myself, training, and thinking about ways to use these technologies to protect and enrich our continent. I call for a digital resistance, a European solidarity to ensure that our future remains anchored in the values of democracy, freedom, and equality. The time to act is now. Together, let’s ensure that AI is a force for humanism. European leaders must take bold steps. History will judge our actions or inaction. #AI #Europe #Innovation #Future #Technology #Democracy #Solidarity #DigitalResistance ### Instagram Post

Business Insider AI 100 | Tech Research Leader | AI, Misinfo, Elections, Social Media, UX, Policy | Chancellor's Public Scholar @ UC Berkeley
Hoping this is the first of many years of articles where "Harris" is quoted about "Harris." Thanks so much to FedScoop's Madison Alder and Rebecca Heilweil for this in-depth reporting! There are some even better quotes from former former White House Office of Science and Technology Policy leader, Alondra Nelson; former advisor at The White House, Ami Fields-Meyer; Public Citizen's Lisa Gilbert; Mercatus Center at George Mason University's Matthew Mittelsteadt; and New America's Lilian P. Coral. From the article: "David E. Harris, a professor at UC Berkeley’s business school who focuses on AI, said it’s not clear that President Joe 'Biden was really driving a strong agenda on tech.' But the president has surrounded himself with 'talented people to work on it, and one of them is Kamala Harris,' he said. The professor also praised Harris for how she connected AI safety concerns to bias and fairness in her London speech in a way that linked current and future potential harms, saying there are 'few leaders who have walked that tightrope so effectively.' He also said that the vice president’s Silicon Valley experience might mean she doesn’t push back hard on tech giants. While California is known as a progressive state, the U.S. technology industry, which is primarily based there, wields significant influence. 'I don’t think we should expect her to take bold stands that are opposed by the major players in the tech industry on AI,' he said." How Could AI Impact Media and Democracy? 🔺 Insights from Viva Technology Paris 🔺 Revisiting a Key Discussion: Last week at Viva Technology in Paris, I had the opportunity to attend an insightful conversation between Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, and Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market. They delved into a crucial topic: How Could AI Impact Media and Democracy? Mathias Döpfner’s Key Points: -Protection of Intellectual Property: "If that's not the case, then science, creative industries, and democracy are all at risk." -Competition: "Too much power in too few hands is dangerous. Competition is essential for innovation." Main Threats Highlighted: → Erosion of democratic values. → Rise of authoritarian influence. → Asymmetric trade policies benefiting non-democratic nations like China. Proposed Solutions: ✓ Ensure protection of intellectual property. ✓ Foster healthy competition. ✓ Implement smart, lean regulation. Why This Matters: → Safeguard innovation. → Prevent power concentration. → Maintain democratic integrity. So, what are your thoughts? How can we better safeguard our democratic values in the digital age? Exciting News Ahead: 🚨 Breton also mentioned two important initiatives that will soon be launched, which are crucial for startups and scale-ups working on digital media products in AI in Europe. Stay tuned for more! #AI #Media #Democracy #Innovation #EuropeanTech #StartupFunding

The Birthplace of the Computer – Bletchley Park is set to hold the International Ai Safety Summit at the start of November! The aims of the summit are - (as outlined by the Gov Dept of Science) – To build a shared understanding of Ai-related risks. Create a process for international collaboration and Ai safety. Determine how individual organisations can improve Ai safety. Find areas for collaborative Ai safety research. Demonstrate that safe, responsible Ai development is beneficial to the World. With so many players in the field of Ai development from Multinationals, to Government agencies to entrepreneurial millionaires from all over the world. How do you police and oversee all these disparate moving parts? I don’t think you can! For instance, what international body is going to make sure the likes of the Chinese or even Elon Musk will fall into line? After all, the Ai goal at the end of the road is so valuable to all the players. They are ultimately racing to achieve the prize of sentient AGI. Whoever gets there first wins all?! (or loses all depending on your standpoint?) The international line-up attending this difficult summit includes the likes of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US Vice President Kamala Harris, Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind and a promised Chinese delegation. Let’s hope they make some progress, but do you really think they will? #innovation #ai #events #technology
