This National Leadership Day, I want to highlight The Challenge Initiative's local luminaries who drive change. Our model is intended to prime local ownership from the outset and nurture a leading role for cities in program design and implementation. As such, TCI doesn't choose the places we engage with. It is entirely demand-driven. Cities self-select to join TCI and bring their own financial and human resources to execute strategies. Cities must be ready and willing to address their challenges. That means that throughout my tenure, I have met and worked with incredible local leaders from communities around the world who are passionate about building a better future. We help scale, but these are the leaders who've taken the initiative and catalyze action. Their appetite for change is inspiring. Excited to dive into two remarkable reads recommended after my recent leadership assessment with Heidrick & Struggles “The Radical Candor” and “Six Thinking Hats.” These books come highly recommended for enhancing leadership skills and strategic thinking. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into them, absorbing the insights, and applying them to our operations here at National Grid in Plymouth. I recently came across a thought-provoking quote from Henry Mintzberg: "I propose an end to the belief that leadership is separate from management, and superior to it. This is damaging management all right, but leadership more so." In a world where we often prioritize leadership over management, Mintzberg's words serve as a reminder that management is just as important as leadership. It's time to recognize the value of both and understand that they are not mutually exclusive.
