In our quest to continually challenge and evolve the cognitive and physical skills of young athletes, today’s COGNIGOALS training spotlight falls on an exercise affectionately termed the Musiala Challenge, demonstrated with skill by 14-year-old Fynn. Dribblers, in particular, will find this challenge both engaging and intensive. The Musiala Challenge is designed not just as a test of physical dexterity but as a rigorous workout for the brain’s “hardware”, essential for two-footedness, game intelligence, and creativity. Musiala Challenge Part 1 of 5: 1. Right Foot (RF): Outside Touch (O) 2. Left Foot (LF): Sole Touch (S) 3. RF: Inside Touch (I) 4. LF: O 5. RF: S 6. LF: I 7. RF: O 8. LF: S 9. RF: I 10. LF: O 11. RF: S 12. LF: I This sequence is crafted to sharpen ambidexterity, prompt quick thinking, and foster imaginative play on the pitch. It emphasizes not just the mechanical execution of skills but their application under varying degrees of pressure and speed, all while maintaining spatial awareness and head position. The beauty of the Musiala Challenge lies in its simplicity and the complexity it introduces at higher speeds and with the added cognitive load of maintaining awareness of one’s surroundings. It’s a testament to the belief that player development transcends physical training, delving into the mental agility required for top-tier performance. We invite you, whether you’re a seasoned freestyler or an aspiring dribbler, to step into this challenge. But don’t stop at just trying - capture your attempt and share it with us. Let’s celebrate the effort, the progress, and the sheer joy of mastering a new skill. Stay tuned for part 2 of the Musiala Challenge. The journey to cognitive excellence and unparalleled creativity on the field is ongoing, and every step forward is a step toward becoming the best version of yourself as a player. Remember, the goal of COGNIGOALS is not just improvement in isolation but fostering a community of learners, teachers, and enthusiasts of the beautiful game who support and inspire each other to reach heights previously unimagined. Let’s move our brains, challenge our limits, and together, elevate the game. #COGNIGOALS #FootballTraining #PlayerDevelopment

⏱️ Reaction Time is how quickly and accurately you respond to visual information. Remember that 80% of info athletes use to decide and execute is visual. We often think of reaction time (i.e., execution) as a mechanism of fast twitch muscle fibers firing on command...but that's NOT the whole story. 🤓 The truth is - Reaction Time is 70% cognitive & only 30% physical. Which aspect are you training??? Research into the brain structures involved in reactions and skill execution reveals 6 critical processes that an athlete's brain completes before they move a muscle. 🤯 🤔 What speeds up reaction time? If roughly 70% of reaction time is cognitive and 30% is physical, then it stands to reason that targeting improvement in the 70% would yield the greatest gains. In my experience this is countercultural. Yet, also in my experience, it works. For example, training the visual and perceptual (i.e., processing and anticipation) abilities of military operators led to approx. 10% improvement in reaction time. (In contrast physical training methods tend to increase RT by ~5%.) 📊 In baseball, that's equal to giving a hitter 43 more milliseconds to make a decision and react to a pitch. 🔥 Training athletes' neurocognitive skills improves Reaction Time and Skill Execution. 💬 Comment with the word "REACTION" and I'll send you an article from our series on Training Athlete Cognition that outlines a framework for improving reaction time and performance. 📬 ♥️ Like 📬 Share 💬 Comment 💻 TheExcellingEdge.com 📬 hello@TheExcellingEdge.com #neurocognitivetraining #cognitiveperformance #mentaltraining #athletedevelopment #neuroscience #cognition #reaction time #visiontraining #humanperformance #brainperformance #sportsvision #athlete #tacticalathlete
