I know these from the work of Max Boisot. Working in complexity, I've never interpreted the dots in these diagrams as representing individuals. For me they can each represent any element in a complex system, including (sub)systems. So even if you say that individuals more or less assimilate into a group, that doesn't diminish the complexity. As for the connections, you seem to assume that they mean 'communication'. For me they mean 'influence': I can be influenced by people directly and indirectly without ever exchanging a word. Even without knowing them: there can be a subsystem somewhere in my organisation that is making rules that influence me or my group. Combining these two, it's about the patterns of influence that form from the connections between the elements. The number of possible patterns with 10 elements and 45 connections is 35 trillion. Even if 99,999% of those patterns are somehow implausible, that still leaves millions of possibilities. Given that 10 is a ridiculously low number of elements for complex human systems, the number of possible patterns remains incredibly large.
