Gaza and Global Jihad Why the Hamas-Israel War Is Unlikely to Revive ISIS and al Qaeda By Cole Bunzel November 2, 2023 Al Qaeda may be eager to profit from a new war between Israel and Hamas, but for the past decade, it has been less capable of inspiring international terrorism than ISIS. The problem for ISIS is that it has never embraced the Palestinian cause with the same fervor as its competitor al Qaeda and will not throw its support behind Hamas, the main Palestinian faction fighting Israel. Although ISIS would be happy to see terrorism against Jewish targets, it supports only what it deems “pure” jihad in the Palestinian territories, meaning jihad by those who adhere to its ideology. Unless al Qaeda or ISIS somehow establishes a foothold in the Palestinian theater, it is difficult to see the crisis in Gaza reviving the fortunes of either group.

ISRAEL AND THE DEMISE OF HAMAS – FROM THE CHESSBOARD TO THE BATTLEFIELD If chess like war is a game of ingenuity, then the demise of Hamas is a foregone conclusion, even if unsupported by the US, or the whole world. The insanity of Jew-hatred and the Islamist agenda of Hamas, to reclaim the whole of Palestine for the bankrupt claim of Islam that Palestine belongs to Muslims, is in itself a form of auto-destruct both in social policy and military think. The mainstay of Hamas is its genocidal intent against Israel, shared with Muslims, Islamic nations and other entities for whom the rabid antisemitism of certain parts of the Quran urges violent Jihad against Israel. More, Hamas calculates that such antisemitism and hatred for Israel is so rife that Israel will be rapidly isolated in the United Nations, once its war against Hamas leads to high civilian casualties. Something Hamas ensures by storing and firing weapons from ordinary homes, turning Gazans into human shields and fielding its combatants in civilian fatigues. For Hamas, the battlefield is a mere chessboard, but Israel has had the best moves: from the chessboard to the battlefield, Israel has caused havoc by its fierce deployment of unblinking Jewish tenacity and reputed warcraft. On the chessboard, Hamas’s Queen Sinwar and Haniyeh are lifeless players; its rooks (Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps) have lost their points in devastating Israeli precision targets; its knights and bishops (Iran’s terrorist proxies in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon) are now worth zeros – they cannot change the course of the war. Although numerous, Hamas’s combatants (the pawns) are today the weakest pieces on the board, decimated mercilessly by Israel’s war machine. Only their king (Jew-hatred), which they cannot take off the board, stands. Its growing retinue, particularly in the US and the West, is a nod to the influence of repressive states. From that descending gloom, the latest daring rescue of two Israeli hostages from Rafah shines Israel’s vindication of its war aims. From the chessboard to the battlefield, it’s another nail in Hamas’s coffin. Israel is entitled to a global coalition against the terrorism of Hamas, and, in a sane world, severe pressure would be put on Hamas’s leaders to release Israeli hostages and negotiate surrender terms. But we are in an alien world in which Israel is being condemned by hypocritical nations known for their all-out warfare with violent Jihadists, leaving a trail of ruined nations and communities in their “war against terror”, spanning several years. They loudly call for a pause or a ceasefire when they never looked back in their own “war against terror” before achieving their aims. Israel must never waver, let the world holler, the demise of Hamas is a foregone conclusion. Go on, Israel, have your next best moves. Hamas has no castling left. Rebuilding the Gaza Strip is not a top priority for many Palestinians. Their primary focus lies in providing support to Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations that aim to destroy the sole homeland of the Jewish people. • Hamas refers to a variety of terrorist actions as “resistance.” These include suicide bombings, stabbings, car-rammings, shootings, firing rockets, gang rapes, and beheadings. This is the only form of “resistance” Hamas has known and practiced since its founding 36 years ago. As far as Hamas is concerned...[a]ll Jews are “settlers” who need to be killed or expelled from their state. • Hamas... is, not surprisingly, also opposed to any plan that seeks to remove it from power in the Gaza Strip.
