📰 Substack's Local Journalism Program Fails to Sustain Long-Term Growth An esteemed food journalist, Hanna Raskin, has decided to part ways with Substack, leaving behind the platform’s Local grant program. This move brings to light the various challenges that writers and journalists are facing in the digital age. Raskin's engagement began with an ambitious Food Section newsletter, supported by a $70,000 Substack grant. Despite such significant backing, including editing services and Getty Images access, Raskin encountered numerous obstacles linked to the platform's limitations. The shift of Substack from a publishing platform to a social media network created substantial complications impacting the impartiality of news publication. Raskin's experience suggests that financial support alone cannot address the growing crisis in local news coverage. The journalist also points to Substack's lack of effective audience customization and reader engagement tools, which culminated in a modest number of 728 paying subscribers, a figure insufficient for sustaining in-depth reporting and operational costs. Although the Food Section gained recognition, receiving awards from the Society for Features Journalism, and a coveted James Beard award, it did not equate to sustainable business success. While it’s tempting to try for “everything that you can,” being selective with your choices is more effective. Local news organizations should place community foundations at the top of the list when starting a funding search.  2⃣ Consider building a presentation that can highlight relevant information about the state of the journalism industry and how it affects your organization. Facts and figures can help educate funders on pressing issues and the potential for impact.  3⃣ After you’ve been awarded a grant, figuring out manageable ways to measure impact is important, especially if renewal is an option. Set calendar reminders for regular data-gathering practices to monitor the key performance indicators for the specific grant. 4⃣ General operating grants that can help pay overhead costs are more challenging to secure than money designated toward a specific project.
