$8 trillion in global costs last year from cybercrime!
White House | National Security Council Special Advisor for Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure Policy
The building blocks of digital economies - infrastructure, data, and identity - are critically important to get right, with massive implications for our liberty, our competitiveness, our rule of law, and our security from how we choose to approach these three areas. Our historical approach to the internet wrought incredible economic benefits, but it would be a mistake to ignore its massive challenges in security and exploitation. To meet the challenges of massively scaling technologies and the growing fragmentation across technological and economic systems, the US must continue to scale coordination and vision across US digital policy in these domains. Especially critical are how we ultimately approach freedom, security, privacy, and accountability for each. In my latest piece with the Atlantic Council, I outline many of the major ongoing policy trends and areas for alignment for these building blocks. These are not separate policy siloes, but are instead integrally interconnected. U.S. digital policy must be grounded in cohesive strategic initiatives that reinforce our national and democratic security, aimed at preserving critical openness needed to defend human freedom, dignity, and economic growth while ensuring necessary accountability for the integrity of the technological bedrock for digital economies.
