Starbucks Expands U.S. Delivery Options with Grubhub Partnership Starbucks has announced a new partnership with Grubhub to expand its delivery service in the United States. This collaboration will allow customers to order Starbucks beverages and food for delivery through the Grubhub app and website. Customers can track their orders and customize their selections within the Grubhub platform. Additionally, Grubhub+ members will benefit from free delivery on qualifying Starbucks orders. In a press release, Meg Mathes, Starbucks' Vice President of Digital Experiences, stated “Customer demand to get Starbucks delivered continues to increase, as evidenced by double-digit growth in the U.S. delivery business this past quarter, indicating that our customers continue to want convenience in their everyday lives.” Mathes continued, “Our new partnership with Grubhub will help fuel this growth by increasing availability of Starbucks products to Grubhub’s tens of millions of customers, via a leading delivery provider.” This partnership is part of Starbucks' ongoing effort to meet the growing demand for delivery. The company seeks to expand its delivery sales, which have been increasing despite flat overall sales. The partnership with Grubhub will initially launch in select markets within Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Illinois by June 2024. Nationwide availability is expected by the end of August 2024. "Starbucks used to be a “Third Place” that was a community hub where people could hang out. The interiors were nice and baristas interacted with their customers. The transition to mobile orders and grab ‘n go meant that store ambience mattered less. Customers cared about “how fast can I get out?” vs. “how long can I enjoy my time here?”. Somewhat ironically, everyone rushing to mobile orders for convenience creates long wait times. This added volume turns the work of a barista from that of a quasi-artisan into a McDonald’s-like assembly line worker. Even as the product commoditized and independent coffee shops offered the old Starbucks vibe, the current Starbucks keeps charging premium prices. Sir, I need caffeine in my dome immediately. Why am I paying $6 for a Grande Iced Coffee that I have to wait 13 minutes to get when I could grab a Red Bull from 7-11 in 2 seconds? Just last week, I was at a networking event and was in a conversation I often find myself in: someone finding out I work at DoorDash, telling me that people *must* be ordering less than they were at the height of the pandemic, and asking how the business is faring, as a result. It never ceases to amaze people (and bring me joy) when I tell them the facts: People are ordering more with DoorDash than they ever have before. We're growing. And we're improving our profitability. A big part of that is thanks to our investment in newer categories like #grocery, #convenience, and #retail. DoorDash Looks to Improve Grocery Delivery Ahead of Instacart IPO! Food ordering and delivery marketplace Grubhub and Mercato, an online platform for independent grocery stores, have joined forces to bring Mercato’s inventory of 950-plus retailers across the United States to the Grubhub Marketplace. Customers can now order from hundreds of locations, with all retailers becoming available over the next few weeks. Through this first-ever third-party delivery partnership for Mercato, Grubhub is growing its Marketplace selection to offer grocery, convenience and alcohol retailers. Meanwhile, Mercato’s retailers can increase their business and e-commerce footprint with access to Grubhub’s millions of customers through the partnership. While technology might be advancing at a rapid rate, the fundamentals of what consumers need still stay the same. When daily commuters are your primary customers, the requirement of quality products without waiting in the queue becomes very important. Starbucks Q2 earning call emphasises the need for them to get back to their drawing board to revisit these fundamentals. With one out of seven orders getting abandoned because of long queues and the non-availability of some of the famous products in all the stores, they got a 2% hit on their net revenue. Efficient kitchen operations and supply availability remain the key here and after solving these problems for EasyEat merchants for close to four years, I am sure technology can solve both these problems as well.
