Anyone who knows me is aware that I do not habitually post on social media. But—I’ve just published a book that I hope will make an important contribution to discussions of higher education and that is meaningful to me as a reflection on the work I have done throughout my career. Warmest thanks to my colleagues at the African Leadership University, Macalester College, the Teagle Foundation, Lawrence University, and Allegheny College, who have over many years been a source of support and inspiration. https://lnkd.in/e9RJkDAR

As we dive into another exciting season of DECA competitions, it is important to take a step back and reflect on what truly makes DECA an invaluable experience. DECA's environment is often overshadowed by the thrill of competition, and of course getting the "DECA Glass." In the heat of competitions, it's easy to become overly focused on winning, sometimes leading members to forget the larger picture. It is important to remember why you are learning the valuable skills taught in DECA. Maybe it's because you want to make a difference in your community, maybe it's because you want to start your own business, or maybe it's so you can become a more effective leader. DECA is not just about who takes home the glass; it's about who applies the skills they learned to emerge with the ability to think critically, lead effectively, and communicate clearly. I became a New Jersey DECA State Officer to serve as an example to members and to show them the practical application of DECA's education. With the help of DECA, I grew my business to what it has accomplished today, and I certainly am the person I am today because of DECA. I encourage all DECA members to figure out what they are passionate about and how they can pursue this passion using the skills they have gained in DECA. Remember, the skills you gain in DECA are your most valuable awards.
