Postdoctoral research fellow roles, by their grant-based and fixed-term nature, are considered non-permanent employment at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and many medical schools and universities worldwide. Such roles can be challenging, especially for early-career scientists with family responsibilities. Limited job security and institutional support, the illusion of career progression, financial instability, insufficient pro-family benefits and perks, work-life balance and relocation issues are but some of the more widely known challenges. Motivated by their pursuit of science and genuine desire to contribute to human knowledge, PhD graduates often find themselves blindsided. That few postdoctoral research fellows receive long service and other annual awards that are given out at various levels in the university is not surprising, given the short tenure of their employment. Despite the odds, many postdocs, intrinsically motivated by a passion for science, still give their best to science and to other colleagues, beyond the paycheck. These are the researchers who deserve the Dean's Award that I had the honour to receive in November 2023. Postdoctoral research fellows at Nanyang Technological University Singapore and a small number of universities are fortunate to have an available progression to senior research fellow and principal research fellow. But how else could a university recognise, reward and retain the invaluable scientific contributions of postdoctoral research fellows? This is the challenge I posed to the Administration when I received the Dean's Award for Administration. Here is my video-recorded response to receiving the award.

Each milestone, every success, and even the setbacks have shaped me into the educator and researcher I am today. Graduating with my bachelor's, master's, and PhD before the age of 30 was no small feat. It required dedication, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Landing a position as an Assistant Professor at 28 was a dream come true, but it was only the beginning. As I embark on this new chapter, I carry with me the lessons learned from both failures and triumphs. They have taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of continuous growth. In the years ahead, I aspire to reach new heights in my research and teaching endeavors. I am fueled by a passion for discovery and a commitment to nurturing the minds of the next generation.
