We're proud to be a part of a nation that welcomes and thrives on the strength of its multicultural communities. Black entrepreneurs and business owners have made incredible contributions to the Canadian economy. From groundbreaking startups to established enterprises, their impact is undeniable – driving growth, creating jobs, and shaping industries. We also acknowledge the challenges they face. Despite their remarkable achievements, Black professionals often encounter barriers and inequities. The journey toward equity is ongoing. The 2024 theme for Black History Month is: “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build”. This theme celebrates the rich past and present contributions and accomplishments of Black people in Canada while aspiring to embrace new opportunities for the future. This month we commemorate the numerous accomplishments and efforts of Black Canadians and their communities, who have over the years made significant contributions to making Canada the multicultural, caring, and affluent country it is today. The role of Black people and their communities in Canada has largely been ignored as a key part of Canada’s history. There is little mention that some of the Loyalists who came here after the American Revolution and settled in the Maritimes were people of African descent, nor the fact that many soldiers of African descent made many sacrifices in wartime as far back as the War of 1812. Few people in Canada are aware of the fact that African people were once enslaved in the territory that is now known as Canada, or of how those who fought enslavement helped to lay the foundation of Canada’s diverse and inclusive society. Juneteenth, also known as "Freedom Day" or "Emancipation Day," holds profound historical significance as a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Annually observed on June 19th, this holiday marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and liberated the last remaining enslaved individuals – a pivotal moment that came over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation due to the slow dissemination of information and lingering Confederate resistance. Over time, Juneteenth celebrations have evolved into a powerful blend of festive cultural traditions and solemn remembrance. Today, parades, music, and educational events honor the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout history. Juneteenth serves not only as a day of reflection on the ongoing pursuit of equality but also as a vibrant celebration of Black culture, heritage, and the indomitable spirit of a people. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, further solidifying its importance as a symbol of freedom, resilience, and the enduring quest for justice. We encourage everyone to embrace the spirit of this day and join in acknowledging the immense contributions and perseverance of the African American community.

Celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth in Canada! A tribute to the resilience, achievements, and culture of Black Canadians. While 42.8% of Black Canadians aged 25 to 54 holding a bachelor’s degree or higher (compared to their non-visible minority counterparts at 33.6%), their employment rates stand at 86.1%, lower than their non-visible minority counterparts at 91.1%. This disconcerting disparity challenges the assumption that educational achievements universally ensure comparable employment rates. Happy National Day of the Afro-Argentines! Since 2013, November 8 has been celebrated as the National Day of Afro-Argentines and African Culture. The date was chosen to commemorate the recorded date for the death of Argetine War Hero María Remedios del Valle. Why have you never heard of her or the Afro-Argentine community? Because it was a community ''they'' tried to erase. But this is why tourism and storytelling are so important. As travel professionals, we have a chance to ''make the invisible visible''. My dear friend Mariana Radisic Koliren through her company Lunfarda Travel is doing exactly that! Amplifying Afro-Argentine stories. Imagine you create your own Black History tour and for the FIRST TIME the History Museum in Buenos Aires goes into their archives, to pull out Black artifacts (they always had) to display Black history! Mariana, you are INCREDIBLE a true GAMECHANGER. When nobody believed in your product, you believed in yourself. When they posted their diversity statements, but didn't follow up with financial support, you funded your passion through your own pocket. If it wasn't for you Black history in Argentina would be completely erased, and now everyone can learn about through the amazing tour you created! THANK YOU, you deserve every award! June is a month filled with celebrations and recognition, but it often feels like the focus on PRIDE overshadows other significant observances, particularly Caribbean Heritage Month. As someone of Caribbean descent, it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of people from the Caribbean. For me, It’s frustrating to see the overwhelming support for PRIDE while Caribbean Heritage Month—and the issues of racial inequality and inequity—receives less attention. This is not to say that PRIDE shouldn't be recognized—it absolutely has its place. However, the challenges faced by Black and Brown communities, including those of Caribbean descent, are deeply ingrained and pervasive, requiring much more visibility and support. Being Black or Brown in America involves navigating a landscape of bias and systemic inequality that is often more visible and more complex. As we move through June, let's ensure that we are also amplifying the voices and experiences of people of Caribbean descent and committing to the ongoing fight for racial justice and equity. I am all for each having its rightful shine but not at the expense of another.

Juneteenth: Celebrating Progress and Renewing Our Commitment to Diversity Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history that marked the end of slavery. As we reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of those who paved the way for freedom and equality, we are reminded of the unbreakable spirit of resilience that has shaped our nation. However, the journey towards true equity and inclusion is far from over. Even in the business world, we continue to grapple with the lingering effects of systemic barriers and biases that have historically hindered the growth and success of underrepresented communities. Diversity is not just a buzzword; it is a fundamental principle that should be woven into the fabric of every organization. It is about creating an environment where every voice is heard, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and experiences. It is about breaking down barriers and fostering a culture of inclusivity, where talent is nurtured, and opportunities are equitable. As business leaders, we have a responsibility to champion this cause. We must actively work to dismantle the obstacles that have prevented marginalized groups from thriving, and we must implement inclusive policies and practices that allow everyone to reach their full potential. True diversity and equal opportunity are not just moral imperatives; they are also business imperatives. They foster innovation, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the diverse communities we serve. They strengthen our ability to attract and retain top talent, regardless of their backgrounds or identities. On this Juneteenth, let us celebrate the progress we have made, but let us also renew our commitment to creating a more just and equitable world, where every individual can thrive and contribute to the success of our businesses and our society.
