The problem, Saharova warns, is the misalignment between emissions and venture capital. Forty-eight percent of VC investment in 2022 was into mobility technology, such as e-scooters. Mobility accounts for only 15 percent of emissions, while more polluting industries like manufacturing, food and agriculture, and the built environment are underfunded. “Eighty-five percent of emissions receive only 52 percent of funding,” according to Saharova. #climatetech #climateVC

2023 was a year of transition. One that I was not looking for, but found me. And I’m so grateful that it did. Reflecting on my move, and recently seeing so many industry peers at #COP28, I wanted to share a little about what I have learnt, 3 months into my new role. Who is KOMPAS VC, what is #venturecapital, and how did it tempt me to move from World Green Building Council?! The answer is simple: the industry needs solutions! For years we have called for major changes in the way we create and use our buildings, to be more energy and resource conscious. Now that we are seeing progress in recognising the sector’s impacts from policy and corporate commitments, attention is naturally focused on HOW do we design better buildings? HOW do we use less/better/lower carbon materials? There is more emphasis than ever on HOW we can accelerate renovation of existing buildings, reduce scope 3 emissions, identify new materials and solutions that can enhance the overall performance and efficiency of new buildings. We simply have to make the low carbon choice easier. This is where venture capital, among other solutions providers, play a crucial role. KOMPAS is an investor in early-stage start-ups with innovative technology solutions that have massive potential to help decarbonise and improve efficiencies in the built environment. For those not in the finance world, it’s a bit like Dragon’s Den / Shark Tank, with pitches from passionate founders being reviewed by our brilliant investment team to see if they fit within our areas of expertise and investment strategy. Mostly we invest in collaboration with other funds to get the most impact from the innovation. And just like the dragons/sharks, every fund is unique, bringing specific expertise and value creation that the founders can benefit from to support their growth. I am very grateful to KOMPAS for providing me an opportunity to be involved in this process. Without identifying, investing, and scaling these solutions, the construction industry will simply be unable to deliver on the high-performance buildings now finally being reflected in regulatory frameworks.
