A typical week: A GM quit. We had to let someone go for inappropriate behavior. One of the stores just got hit with late invoices that we somehow missed. Another store that I visited had the same existing issues operationally that I saw two or three weeks ago. R&M for one store is so high that you can’t make it up. We don’t post things like this on LinkedIn or other social channels. We are not immune to issues and opportunities. But I can tell you one thing and that is that we have a winner’s mindset. We celebrate our wins out loud! We shine a light on all issues and we go straight at them until they are resolved. We laugh at our mistakes and make sure we do not repeat them. Surely that’s a really silly idea? How do you beat the competition? One way is to locate yourself far away from your competitors. To be so good that your customers are prepared to travel. So too your suppliers. Then there’s zero competition. Easy win, right? Well, unless you’re a Michelin starred restaurant located in the foothills of some far distant destination, there’s possibly a better way. I think Porter called it ‘clustering’. And hawker centres know a thing or too about it. Dozens of similar offerings, the ultimate competitive own goal, but on the flip side, customers everywhere, easy for suppliers to supply, well, everyone. Shared services to benefit from, like the folks who keep the place clean. And a buzz you could only dream of hundreds of miles out of town. So the old idea of being where your customers are is one thing, but how about, be where your competitors are. And be so good that everyone wins. Because when you’re surrounded by competition, it really makes you up your game. It’s inspiring and humbling, all at the same time.

Maybe your big opportunity just has not happened YET  Many years ago I was working at a large, three-story restaurant in San Francisco near the Moscone Convention Center. This restaurant already had a major, well-known supplier for their produce. When a man named Oscar showed up asking to be their supplier, they quickly turned him away. Oscar regularly showed up and offered his services as a produce supplier. The Management kept turning him down. They even occasionally laughed at Oscar’s persistence and make jokes about whose turn it was to tell him no. That was until one day there was a problem with their regular supplier. Everyone knew Oscar by name and he was the person who got the call to be their supplier. Oscar was ready for the opportunity and he took it! At the time, I thought this was Oscar’s big break. Looking back at how persistent (and pretty darn cool) he was, I wonder if this was just one of many opportunities that came Oscar’s way that year. However, I kept delaying this venture, always feeling unprepared and fearing potential setbacks. Until last December, when I committed to my dream. I invested in two books, absorbed their contents, diligently took notes, acquired the necessary equipment, and embarked on creating my first glass of homemade beer. The outcome? The beer was not exceptional due to its quality, but rather because it was a manifestation of my own craftsmanship. How does this narrative tie into my professional development? In my career, every new role or responsibility triggers a similar journey. The initial eagerness to excel is followed by a wave of self-doubt, questioning if I am adequately prepared for the challenge. Yet, just as with brewing, I've discovered a pattern: taking the time to learn the basics, equipping myself with the right tools, then diving deep into execution. Surprisingly, the results often mirror the satisfaction I found in my homemade creation - exceeding expectations and providing a profound sense of accomplishment. The lesson? Waiting until you feel fully prepared is an elusive pursuit. You'll never attain perfect readiness. Instead, build the foundations of knowledge, equip yourself with the right tools, and then, just like crafting that first glass of homemade beer, take the leap.
