When we ride, we will ride for the oceans, forests, original peoples, wildlife, clean air, regeneration and future generations. Any cyclists around Sonoma County this August 17th? I’m excited to announce that our family winery Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates will be partnering with The Climate Ride and founder Caeli Quinn on August 17th for the Sonoma County edition! Less than 2% of all philanthropy goes towards the environment and we want to change that but also make it fun. We’ve hand selected a number of environmental NGOs, a lot of whom I’m closely affiliated and Caeli is affiliated with across the categories of oceans, forests, wildlife, soil and clean energy. If you sign up you can join one of these teams or create your own team with the proceeds benefiting these incredible organizations who are all very much in need of funds. I’ve provided catalytic funding to some but there needs to be WAY more funders, even through micro-grants of multiple humans contributing $50 stepping up as I’m just one person and these orgs need multiple funding sources to scale. I’ve been pretty busy the last 6 years doing the work alongside some of these orgs so I’m incredibly grateful to the team at The Climate Ride + Jackson Family Wines and for my team Grounded.org who have been coordinating behind the scenes and helping offload from me as I continue to do the work. I’ll be laser focused with all groups as I come back online next week. We won’t get out of the climate crisis if the solutionists aren’t funded beyond catalytic funding, that’s a fact. Thank you Christa Gyori, MBA Leaders on Purpose and KOKO Foundation for having me speak today about philanthropy going towards Mother Earth. 🌍 What an incredible community you brought together, truly left feeling inspired and loved everyone on my panel.

“I work for the ocean.” Dr. Wallace J. Nichols 💔 Very deeply saddened by the passing of a dear friend/ kindred soul brother, a former mentor and someone who sat on my advisory board for Grounded.org and helped in the very beginning. He also became a deeper friend after we commiserated about the plight of the planet and both losing our homes to a wildfire, his 2 years after mine. “If you’re going to think of climate solutions you have to include oceans,” J told me from the very beginning and James (JJ) Osbun and I responded “okay.” 🫡 🌊. “Formerly a senior scientist at Ocean Conservancy, J holds a M.E.M. degree in Natural Resource Economics and Policy from Duke University and a Ph.D. degree in Wildlife Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona. He received a Bradley Fellowship to study the impacts of sea level rise at Duke University Marine Lab, a Marshall Fellowship while at the University of Arizona, and a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico marine station in Mazatlán. In 2011 he was inducted as a Fellow National member of the Explorers Club. In 2014 he received the University of Arizona’s Global Achievement Award. J has authored more than 200 publications, lectured in more than 30 countries and nearly all 50 states, and appeared in hundreds of media outlet.” He also was just an incredibly wonderful human being and bestest friend of my old babysitter and dear sister Tara @sonomagirl and her ex husband Ben who is also one of my close friends and partner to their 2 daughters Cece and Ellie. When you lose someone like J it’s very hard to explain how deeply it impacts you, as he was one of us doing so much for the planet, you feel it as a friend of his but you also feel it for the oceans. Huge loss for the conservation movement + 🌍. I’ll be taking this week off work entirely for anyone trying to reach me, I’ll be honoring J and spending time with my family. ARK stands for an Act of Restorative Kindness for nature. With no money, no marketing and just her relentless determination Mary Reynolds has created a movement of 22,000 “ARKevists” throughout the world who are returning their gardens to their original states by planting native plants and giving half their land back to nature. Even if you don’t have access to land, you can create what Mary calls “pollinator stopover” zones in your windowsill with native plants that can support every ounce of life possible. An ARK is a restored, native ecosystem. Mary encourages us to not only become gardeners but to become guardians of the natural world and to take matters into our own hands. “The forests over here are not forests, they’re plantations. They’re monocultures,” she says. “There is nowhere safe because there’s no life in those places, and they can’t go into our gardens because we’ve tidied them and filled them with non-native plants, which don’t support the web of life to be abundant and healthy. And so all these creatures that we’re completely and hopelessly dependent upon are clinging on at the edges.” @letsbuildanark If you are someone that has access to land and wants to join the movement of ARKevists, you can simply order Mary’s book, We Are The Ark: Returning Our Gardens to Their True Nature Through Acts of Restorative Kindness, link in my bio. This book is a blueprint on how to become a steward and ally to all creatures in your local community and restore and heal the land. You’ll have to google a native plant nursery in your local area and pay it a visit. I know there’s one in my community, Healdsburg, CA. What an incredible honor Gina Papabeis and SeaLegacy family

My heart is full from last week hosting @benki.piyako an incredible leader of the Ashaninka peoples, his whole team + @caciqueninawahunikui Chief Ninawa of the Huni Kui peoples at my home in Healdsburg. We organized a dinner while Benki was touring in the US inviting environmental leaders, funders, friends, people with extensive networks and my family to learn about the importance of indigenous leadership and guardianship for the protection of our only home. 🌎 Humanity is a thread woven intricately into the web of life and their teachings remind me that we’re just one aspect of life on this sacred planet. The dinner focused specifically on Brazil’s Amazon rainforest ecosystem and the amazing leadership of Chief Ninawa of the Huni Kui and a member of @earthelders and Benki Piyãko and his institute @yorenka.tasorentsi which has planted over 2 million trees, regenerating rainforest that had previously been chopped down. They are not only working hard to safeguard the Amazon rainforest but also regenerate that which has been destroyed. Brazil contains 60% of the entire Amazon rainforest and in its entirety the Amazon sequesters 5% of ghgs annually. Indigenous communities have a different view of the earth than most of us. They believe we should treat our home with the principles of respect, reverence and regeneration. I find their teachings as imperative for the rest of us if we want our species to transition into living in harmony with nature. I’m beyond humbled and honored to learn deep teachings and ancient wisdom from these two incredible leaders. I had the pleasure of visiting them both in their communities a few months ago. I’m still processing and integrating my experience with them and I know I will carry myself differently since reemerging from the Amazon with these teachings and a determination to support their leadership. Thank you to all who organized this evening. Love the Stop Ecocide International crew. Each day 70,000 acres of rainforest are lost to deforestation which equates to 1.2 acres per second. If you don’t already know about the movement to make large scale destruction of the earth a crime, I highly encourage you checking it out. An honor to work with you Anna Maddrick + Jojo Mehta to build the movement in the US towards public awareness on ecocide becoming the 5th Crime Against Peace in the International Criminal Court. I coordinate the movement in the US alongside Jo Little so if you are open to spreading the word, we’d love to chat. We all know genocide is wrong and is intrinsically tied to ecocide, but it’s not considered wrong to destroy the forests, oceans and our life support systems, which if they go we go. “‘Ecocide’ means unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts.” +Jo Little
