But first things first: In 2021, an intense time as CEO of Formel D Group came to an end. The company is a leading automotive service provider, and together with more than 10,000 colleagues, we built up 22 international branches and subsidiaries in order to strategically develop the company into a global player in a huge industry. After that, my plan was simple: Only share my expertise in a few consulting projects. Work much less and be more flexible to enjoy my personal life. Well ... Did you know that only 2.4% of green hydrogen production stops if a stack failure is detected in our megawatt-scale electrolyser? ⬇️ We call this: Built-in redundancy for maximum uptime. But why is this so important? We talk a lot about costs and efficiency, which are important for obvious reasons. However, there is little public discussion about failures. But like with any other technical device, errors and failures can occur in electrolysers. When green hydrogen production comes to a standstill, time is money. For example, an H2 refuelling station operator can only provide a limited amount of stored green hydrogen, and a breakdown of the whole electrolyser lasting several weeks would mean massive economic losses. Enapter's #AEM Nexus 1000 is a 1 MW containerised electrolyser featuring 42 AEM strings around a common balance of plant. Each string contains 10 AEM Stack modules, is able to produce 5 Nm3 of H2 per hour and can be controlled independently. Instead of facing single points of failure, this modular design removes bottlenecks and provides a high degree of stack redundancy. Only 2.4% of production stops if a stack failure is detected. In other words: You can shut down one string and easily replace the affected stack module, while the rest of the electrolyser’s strings still produce green hydrogen. Existing customers are now increasingly ordering large devices in the megawatt range after their initial experience with our compact single-core electrolysers: Our #AEM Electrolyser technology has already proven its advantages in practice and I’m happy to share this news. We have received an order for an AEM Nexus 500 electrolyser from the prestigious Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), which has on several occasions been recognised as one of the 100 best universities in the world. This containerised AEM Electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen has a capacity of 500 kW and will be used as part of Europe’s largest research infrastructure project for renewable energies – ‘Energy Lab’ in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg. With this order, Enapter deepens its business relationship with #KIT; the university already became a customer of the electrolyser manufacturer in 2020. Energy Lab is a KIT project in cooperation with the #Helmholtz Centres, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the #Jülich Research Centre. The project is jointly researching the intelligent linking of environmentally friendly energy generation, storage and supply options. In addition, energy systems of the future are simulated and tested there based on real consumer data. The aim is to improve the transport, distribution, utilisation and storage of electricity and thus create the basis for the energy transition. Green hydrogen produced with the AEM Nexus 500 will be used for various test scenarios of sector cogeneration, including waste heat projects, and will supply several pilot plants. The AEM Nexus 500 combines several dozen AEM Stacks to form a complete system that can produce around 225 kilograms of hydrogen per day, with a hydrogen purity of 99.999%. Enapter has received another order for an AEM Nexus 500 from Canada. Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Burnaby, British Columbia, will deploy the AEM Nexus 500 as part of the “Clean Hydrogen Hub” research project. The hydrogen produced on site will be made available for industrial companies and researchers to use. Additionally, the project aims to raise public awareness about hydrogen, inform on its potential and structures, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in British Columbia through hydrogen utilisation. Enapter's integration partner, Ensol Systems Inc., is responsible for the project implementation. The commissioning of the AEM Nexus 500 at SFU is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025. Ensol had previously ordered single-core class electrolysers from Enapter and, after successful practical testing, is now extending their use to to the multi-core class as well. These are two more good examples of how you can quickly start piloting a relatively small hydrogen system to significantly scale up in a second step. Across two exciting back-to-back events, these three topics have grabbed the most attention during #BNEFSummit Munich & #H2Kolloquium ⬇️ Last week, I took the chance to speak at both BloombergNEF Summit in Munich and the H2-Kolloquium Baden-Württemberg in Baden-Baden. It’s always good to connect with the H2 ecosystem in person and discuss the latest with experts from across our industry. I noticed that three Enapter specifics were of particular interest to the audience: 1. AEM electrolysis offers the best of both worlds Like alkaline electrolysers, AEM doesn’t require incredibly scarce and expensive Iridium (or titanium for that matter), but our electrolysers also mirror PEM technology’s ability to work flexibly and efficiently with intermittent renewables from wind and solar plants – making our AEM Electrolysers the green hydrogen jack of all trades. Aspects such as the best-in-class flexibility from 3-100% of our MW-sized AEM Nexus, the short ramp-up/down times and the supply chain stability were rated as very future-proof. 2. High modularity offers customers real advantages We use the same standardised AEM Stack for all our electrolysers. This has enabled us to scale our product portfolio quickly from kW scale up to the megawatt class – in line with market demand. For example, our AEM Nexus 1000 features 420 AEM Stacks. Reliability is a key requirement for our customers: When green hydrogen production comes to a standstill, time is money and energy is lost. Instead of facing single points of failure, our modular design removes bottlenecks and provides a high degree of stack redundancy. Only 2.4% of production stops if a stack failure is detected. That’s why we call this: Built-in redundancy for maximum uptime. 3. Proven AEM technology at your fingertips We have delivered more than 5,000 AEM Electrolysers to global H2 projects. So the chances are high that we meet customers and partners at such conferences. In Baden-Baden, Prof Dr Dietmar Graeber from the Technische Hochschule Ulm told me how much he appreciates the robustness of our devices. And the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), as co-host, just recently ordered an AEM Nexus 500. Another good news: I’m happy to share that in the first months of 2024, Enapter has further expanded its French business activities – with contracts signed for over 270 #AEM Electrolysers for France alone: In general, we see a growing demand for our single-core electrolyser AEM EL 4 with an increase in order volume for Q1 of around 330% compared to the previous year. To start with, we signed a supply contract for 176 AEM EL 4 electrolysers with PowiDian Energy. This long-standing certified partner and system integrator is planning to use our modular single-core electrolysers in a wide range of applications. A large part of the delivery will consist of Enapter's water-cooled AEM EL 4 LC variant and will be integrated into larger containers in order to endure harsh environments and utilise the waste heat generated to increase efficiency even more. For 10 years now, PowiDian has been using our AEM Electrolysers for projects in the field, whether they be off-grid or grid-connected, providing peak shaving and/or enabling energy storage. Thank you for the trust placed in us! Another 63 compact single-core electrolysers were ordered by the French project developer CORSICA SOLE. Their Folell'Hy hydrogen production pilot project will be directly connected to the Corsica Sole solar power plant in Folelli. When too much renewable energy is produced on islands, the grid operator limits the amount that can be fed into the grid. The energy produced in excess at the Folelli plant during these limitations will then be used to produce up to 2 tons of green hydrogen per year. The hydrogen produced with the Enapter electrolysers will be used in the maritime mobility sector, among others. The project is being integrated with the help of our partner HENSOLDT in France. In 2022/2023, Enapter had already delivered a total of 115 AEM EL 4s to this provider of solutions and services in the electronics sector for industrial customers. In addition, our French partner H2Gremm has ordered 40 AEM EL 4 electrolysers. The company develops sustainable, hydrogen-based mobility solutions and applications in the home sector. Enapter sees strong demand for the AEM EL 4 in building applications, particularly in Europe, and is delighted to have another partner who now also offers turnkey systems on the French market. Not only are we gaining more new customers internationally, but we are also seeing existing customers reordering higher quantities for further projects. This shows that the market recognises our AEM Electrolysers as mature technology that fulfills customers’ energy transition needs in many sectors. With these orders from France, we are once again demonstrating our expertise and strength in applications featuring the on-site production of green hydrogen. ⬇️ I’m happy to provide a first big update on the cooperation agreement we signed with Solar Invest for the US market last December: As part of this agreement, Solar Invest, our exclusive partner and authorised distributor of Enapter products in the US, has established their subsidiary Clean H2 Inc. to build the sales and service network within the country. The newly founded company headquartered in Colorado, USA has already received orders for 2 MW-sized AEM Nexus 1000 units and a large number of AEM EL 4 single-core electrolysers. In addition to the provision and implementation of Enapter products, the contracts also include first-level support for all activities in the USA. These first orders are worth USD 5.4 million. The #AEM Electrolysers from the current orders are used in the heavy-duty and air transportation sectors, among others. Clean H2's sales efforts focus on our multi-core class devices, Enapter's AEM Electrolysers, ranging from higher kW to megawatt capacities. These devices have generated significant interest in the USA. Growth opportunities for CleanH2 - and thus also for Enapter - also arise in connection with the US government's Inflation Reduction Act, which provides for a significant expansion of renewable energies and the promotion of hydrogen applications. Enapter's electrolysers achieve significant competitive advantages thanks to their patented #AEM  technology, scalability and modular design, which enable the devices to be highly efficient and flexible in combination with local renewables. In addition, Enapter's AEM Electrolysers don’t require incredibly scarce and expensive Iridium – unlike other electrolysis technologies. The volume of other potential projects in CleanH2’s sales pipeline amounts to around EUR 8 million as at the beginning of last month.
