In the race to serve large enterprises with a comprehensive data analytics platform needed for things like Generative AI, Databricks is certainly doing a good job lately in the perception war it's engaged in with rival Snowflake. Databricks just announced that its got funding from none other than Capital One, the top-paying client of Snowflake, as reported in the story below by Sharon Goldman. And this comes just a few days after news leaked that another big customer, Instacart, had started shifting more spend from Snowflake to Databricks. Yes, there's been some publicity about the money Databricks is burning as a private company, but this could be a smart strategy to stay private as long as possible to keep making dents in Snowflake's market without feeling the pressure of the public markets. More big news in the #AI tech world! Databricks, the San Francisco-based AI/data analytics startup (Started in 2013), is in early talks with Baltimore based T. Rowe Price to raise funds at a staggering $43 billion valuation!!! If this funding round comes to fruition, it would mark a significant jump from the company's $38 billion valuation two years ago, spearheaded by Morgan Stanley's Counterpoint Global. The importance of this can't be understated, especially considering Databricks' recent collaborations, notably with NVIDIA. Together, we've been instrumental in turbocharging Apache Spark 3.0 with #GPU acceleration. GPU acceleration wasn't just another step for Databricks; it's a giant leap for the broader data engineering, analytics, and machine learning communities. The GPU acceleration drastically speeds up machine learning model training times, and also benefits non-AI workloads like Spark SQL and DataFrame operations. Should the deal with T. Rowe Price go through, Databricks will be in an even stronger position to push the frontiers of what's possible in analytics and AI, solidifying its role as an industry heavyweight. As businesses increasingly pivot towards data-driven decision-making, a powerhouse like Databricks securing significant funding could set new standards for what enterprises should expect from analytics platforms. Rumors have it that Databricks will be IPO'ing at some point soon as well. Currently, there’s little information on the Databricks IPO, but the company has been hinting at its plans to go public for a while.
