These are some potential environmental impacts of lithium extraction from the US volcano. 1. Water consumption: The mining process will require large amounts of water to remove clay and leach lithium from the claystone. This could affect the availability and quality of water resources in the region. 2. Acid pollution: The leaching process will use sulfuric acid to extract lithium from the claystone. This could generate acidic wastewater and tailings that could contaminate the soil and groundwater if not properly treated and disposed of. 3. Land disturbance: The mining operation will involve digging up and transporting large volumes of claystone and other materials. This could cause erosion, habitat loss, and landscape alteration in the caldera and surrounding areas. 4. Greenhouse gas emissions: The mining and processing of lithium will consume energy and emit greenhouse gases. This could contribute to global warming and climate change.
Game changer! A deposit of lithium was found in the USA along the Nevada–Oregon border. This finding appears to be larger than the previously considered “world’s largest” lithium deposit found beneath a Bolivian salt flat. The Bolivian deposit has an estimated 20 - 40 million tons of lithium. ‘Let’s hope this will be the change that we need globally to help reduce the price of lithium and increase supply security! #energytransition #energysecurity #mineralresources #lithium #electricvehicles #renewableenergy #continuedsuccess

In the global race for lithium, which is often dubbed “the white gold,” Bolivia should be one of the winners. The South American country holds the world’s largest reserves at an estimated 23 million tonnes, but a decades-long nationalisation strategy, coupled with economic and political instability, is preventing the industry from taking off. Divisions in the governing party have spiralled over the past few weeks, and they may not be resolved until next year’s election.
